Article source: PLP Architecture

The Francis Crick Institute is an extraordinary example of collaborative work in science today. A consortium of six of the UK's largest organisations for biomedical research, the Institute brings together multidisciplinary groups of researchers including biologists, chemists, physicists, engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians to develop ground-breaking research for the improvement of human health. To house this centre, we devised a building that operates both as a complex laboratory as well as a place for collaboration and exchange.

Sunday, May 5th, 2019

Article source: FABRICations

Casco Loft is an interior design project developed by FABRICations for one of the Superlofts Houthaven , in Amsterdam. The three stories dwelling takes advantage of the flexibility of the structure to deliver an innovative experience of a housing interior, in line with the resiliency principles of FABRICations.

The design relies on a range of strategies that aim to privilege interaction and flexibility, encouraging shared activities and free use. Enclosed spaces, like the bedrooms, are minimized and strategically placed to leave visual and physical proximity of common spaces.

Dehavilland Studios in London, England by RUSSIAN FOR FISH

Friday, May 3rd, 2019

Article source: RUSSIAN FOR FISH

In Clapton, beside the River Lea, stands a striking art deco building bearing the name ‘Dehavilland’ in vertical red lettering. In the 1940s, this was a ‘shadow factory’, producing aircraft components for use in the war effort, including parts for the Mosquito – the ‘wooden wonder’ that dominated the skies in World War II.

Today, as a superb example of the modernist architecture of the legendary engineer Sir Owen Williams, the 1930s building has become a highly sought-after London living space, its former warehouse interior transformed into a series of open, loft-style studio apartments by the awardwinning developer Hollybrook.

Care facilities and residences for the elderly

On the rolling landscape of a former farmer’s field, today enclosed by suburban development, a new care and recreation centre for the elderly takes form. The plan is articulated in such a way as to leave breathing space between the new building and the surrounding urban tissue, while realising the necessary programme for a community with a growing need for such facilities.

71 social housing units in La Courneuve, France by JTB Architecture and mobile architectural office

Friday, May 3rd, 2019

Article source:  JTB Architecture and mobile architectural office

In La Courneuve, two buildings and 18 duplex units provide a great diversity of housing. A meticulous architectural style contributes to the regeneration of the Cité des 4000.

The “Cité des 4000” projects many images, points of view and studies across the political, urban and artistic disciplines. Built in 1956 by the Ville de Paris, this large-scale operation was designed as an estate composed of blocks sited alongside each other. This siting principle generated undefined and unused free spaces, preventing the appropriation of public spaces which are wasted. The regeneration of the Cité des 4000 has endeavoured to suppress the effect of uniform and impersonal blocks to give, once again, meaning to the public space with a true landscape and human dimension.

Gwynne St Studio in Melbourne, Australia by Biasol

Friday, May 3rd, 2019

Article source: Biasol

Ideas of culture and connectivity underpinned our design for the Gwynne Street Studio, a dynamic warehouse conversion in Cremorne, an inner-city suburb of Melbourne. The brief called for two new tenancies within a warehouse shell – a new office for Create Company and a new studio for our own practice, with a shared boardroom and breakout space.

The warehouse’s art deco exterior and the neighbourhood’s creative/industrial past provided rich inspiration for our design. Once a hub for manufacturing, Cremorne has seen an influx of young professionals, start-ups and creative industries in recent years, breathing new life into its mix of warehouses, factory shells and Victorian cottages.
