The Interactive Sliced House by michael jantzen studio

Tuesday, March 10th, 2015

Article source: michael jantzen studio

The Interactive Sliced House is part of the House as a Metaphor series of public art installations that play with the iconic house shape in a variety of abstracted contexts, juxtaposing the house with other recognizable symbols. Minimal and conceptual, these structures are meant to interrogate the meaning and function of the house by exploring how simple interventions affect its interpretation. In this case, the intervention consists of a series eight segments (or slices) that make up the entire shape of the symbolic house. Two of the slices at either end of the house are solid forms except for a doorway located at the center, both of these slices are fixed to a concrete pad. The other six slices in between the solid forms are open frame silhouettes that can be moved on tracks (mounted into the concrete pad) back and forth in and out of alignment with the two ends of the structure. In this way, the entire shape of the house can be changed by fragmenting it in many different ways in order to form very unexpected spaces in and around the structure.

Tuesday, March 10th, 2015

Article source: Chalupko Design

This post-industrial apartment is located in the center of Warsaw in a building of an old factory of silver and bronze which was recently revitalized. The owner, french foreigner, asked designers from Chalupko Design to create a modern, cosy interior which would fit to the historical building and its facade. That’s why the apartment is finished in industrial style. There are such characteristic elements as bricks, platform table, black steel book shelf and bar-chairs. All kept in modern and light style. The space is calm, neutral, but also warm and pleasant. The beige palette is contrasted with walnut wood, black granite counter-top, black steel elements in the living room, dark grey tiles in the bathroom and dark wallpaper in the bedroom. The overall impression is that of warmth and lightness. Modern lighting completes it.

PANI community centre in Rajarhat, Bangladesh by SchilderScholte architects

Tuesday, March 10th, 2015

Article source: SchilderScholte architects

The Dutch foundation Pani commissioned SchilderScholte architects to design an educational building in the north Bengal town of Rajarhat. The architects couple embraced this pro bono assignment coming from ideological motives and knowledge sharing. The building serves as a community centre for folks from the region, aged from toddlers to elder people. During the design process attention was mainly focused on locally available materials and weather conditions. The starting point was to realize a building using materials and skills from within a 15 miles radius around the site. Bamboo, hand-shaped brick, Mango wood, reused steel, local mortar and wafer-thin recycled corrugated panels are the main materials used in the building. The drive was to encourage locals to become aware on the basic principles of sustainability and durable building concepts. In effect close to zero electricity or fossil fuels were used during construction and other necessities required for erecting this building. Thus realizing an environmentally friendly building that contributes to the community in a significant way. The plan (79×105 ft) is East-West oriented and consists of two volumes under a large bamboo roof construction. The classrooms and lavatories are positioned on the South side and on the North side we find the workshop with store. Two sight lines traverse the building in all four directions. The lifting of the roof high above the volumes has achieved a considerable reduction of heat build up within the spaces. Further cooling is provided by cross ventilation, surrounding vegetation and the nearby pond. With the completion of this striking design the architects have proved that conventional local resources and materials can be used to build successful environmentally friendly unconventional architecture.

“Simply … the SilverWoodHouse … any attempt to adjectives falls short of the final experience of contemplation … congratulations and thanks Ernesto”

These were the words of my clients Rui and Marisa when asked about SilverWoodHouse. I could not be more impressed by the answer, on my way to see the architecture. A challenge, an interpretation, a creation, by me, not for me, but for someone.
