Thursday, September 25th, 2014

Article source: SUSTAINABLE.TO + ERA Architects

The Sky-o-swale is a shade-water structure that filters rainwater through a green roof, into an underground cistern. The water is used to irrigate the Community Garden. More than that, the Sky-o-swale is a shaded community gathering space—a stage for performances and seating for the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) /Jumpstart sports pad. It’s a wondrous structure, with a truly amazing history.

Al Hilal Bank Tower in Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi by Goettsch Partners

Thursday, September 25th, 2014

Article source: Goettsch Partners

The Al Hilal Bank Tower project was an exceptional design opportunity on a highly visible and distinguished site on Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi. Goettsch Partners developed a design solution that offered a unique form derived from a combination of site and contextual influences. The building varies in its massing and aesthetic in order to provide a unique and distinguished building for the site. The building derives its massing from a push and pull effect at the outer corners to achieve a unique form. The building’s skin changes at the “void” locations to accentuate the shifting aesthetic. The tower itself is a value driven class A office building composed of efficient lease spans and column free interior floor plates. The Al Hilal Bank Tower incorporates a distinguished design that will set the standard for the island.

Hong Kong Ferry Terminal in China by Michael Arellanes II (MA2)

Thursday, September 25th, 2014

Article source: Michael Arellanes II (MA2)

In continuation of the study of vector based geometries, the Hong Kong Ferry Terminalis a proposal that demonstrates the aesthetics of vector curvatures and natural parameterization. The formulation of forces and arcs give rise to multiplicity in Euclidean geometry around a given set of parameters. Due to the magnitude and direction of layered line segments, the connecting lines generate varied degrees of arcing paths and surfaces, from simple to the complex. The increase in variables may restrict or give rise to excessive deformation in reasoned geometric expression. The intention behind the ferry terminal is to focus the current modes of curved vector tectonics and apply its discourse into the synthesis ofthe body or shell of the building.

Viktoria – Multi-purpose building in Bratislava, Slovakia by Grido, architektura & design

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

Article source: Grido, architektura & design

At some point, every project is subject to compromise. A compromise between the developer’s requirements and the site’s potential, between the architect’s idea and the construction company’s abilities. Architecture is about finding a compromise.
Multipurpose building Viktoria is located on a complicated site in Bratislava’s city center – at the frontier of two different worlds – of an active boulevard on one side and of a quiet residential area on the other.
