Vertical Court in Greenbank Park, Singapore by HYLA Architects

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Article source: HYLA Architects

A courtyard on two levels sits in the centre of this semi-detached house. On the first level, a frangipani tree sits in the middle of a pond, framed by a timber clad box. The double volume living room and the dining room wraps around this courtyard. The second storey level of the courtyard lies over the dining area and in front of the master bedroom. The full height glass facade facing the courtyard is screened by interlocking vertical and horizontal timber members. The courtyard offers the house a lot of privacy as well as letting in light into the cetnre of the house. It also acts as a buffer against noise from a major road a distance away.

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Article source: 100architects

This project is located in Shanghai, on East Nanjing road’s Century Square, the most famous and glamorous pedestrian street in the “heart” of the city center.

The essence of this street is its commercial status, which was historically developed as a link between East and West, connecting directly the port with the city, therefore used as the principal trading platform, becoming a cultural and social active axis.

3 VAULTS in Turin, Italy by R3Architetti

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Article source: R3Architetti

We have been asked to reconfigure the interior of a three-room apartment of about sixty square meters in Turin to accommodate a new type of home who could also function as Airbnb. The new plan layout emphasizes the three vaults that crown the entire volume of the house: two of them frame the living area and one the bedroom and bathroom area. By cutting the septum that divided the two northern vaults, the living area takes a diagonal orientation that expands the perception of space. This axis scheme is further emphasized by the geometry of the sofa and by the wooden niche that outlines the study area and gives access to the bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen, made with reinforced concrete cast on site and oak doors, divides the dining room from an extra area used as utility and store room. The dialogue between different materials defines the dining area: concrete and wood for the kitchen, exposed concrete for the walls, zinc-coated steel pipes and wooden top for the table. The studio niche leads to the space held within the third vault where the bedroom and the bathroom are: this area is divided by a septum which maintains the space continuum at the ceiling level. On this third vault the original 1905 decoration has been brought back to the surface.

Residential building in Staines, UK by Architects of Invention

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Article source: Architects of Invention

The building is seven stories high with descending terraces at the front, which offer views towards the river from the internally situated apartments. While the building is foremost designated as residential, part of the ground floor is occupied with space for retail. The building’s round shape creates public spaces on the ground floor – opening to the north–east between the Strata House and the new development and also from the south-east corner on the embankment by the bridge.

Cupolas by Martin Rajniš

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Article source: Martin Rajniš

Cupolas are an experimental project to verify the structural possibilities of the cupola and methods of enveloping it. The saga began in the summer of 2011, when we built the first cupola in the meadows at Maxov. It is a variation on the tried-and-tested hollow stack system, only the components are joined with screws. It is beautiful. Cross-country skiers ran through it in winter. We decided to give it a dress of ice. Frozen water created beautiful shapes on the thin latticework, and so the first envelope version saw the light of day.

“Building at Beylikdüzü” in Istanbul, Turkey by YEGENA

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Article source: YEGENA

The building at Beylikdüzü / İstanbul was designed in 2011. Starting point of this design was the segmentation of a rectangular prism whose size is at maximum allow able by local zoning regulations, by load-bearing walls. After this first design step, while these load-bearing walls form the balconies on the building block , they also establish the facade of the building by back and forth free and independent movements between floors. This secondary and final step is  perceived especially from perspective views and constitutes an irregular repetition array. Although started with a regular geometry, by the help of this irregular repetition array , the desired attractive irregular rhythm is achieved.

“CUBE 2” OFFICE TOWER in GUADALAJARA, MEXICO by Estudio Carme Pinós

Tuesday, February 10th, 2015

Article source: Estudio Carme Pinós

It can’t be denied that a tower has always a will of singularity and that its sculptural value is its most precious asset.

In this case, we don’t want to disconnect this sculptural value from its structural expression; we believe that any balancing act which its way of working is easily understood, responding to a carefully measured calculation, will reflect a tension that is, at the same time, harmony.
