Six Walls House in Saltsjö-Boo, Sweden by ARRHOV FRICK ARKITEKTKONTOR

Wednesday, April 1st, 2015

Article source: ARRHOV FRICK ARKITEKTKONTOR

The plot just outside Stockholm is located in a scenic area where mostly weekend homes are inserted among pine trees and rocks.
Six Walls House became early in the process a working title. The plot is long and narrow and extends between the road and the water. Perhaps as a contrast to the context, we wanted to build the house around a robust and clear material and concrete blocks with cement plaster became an important part. Simple geometry and detailing have been essential in order to build the house within a tight budget.

“Hostel Wadi in Hoge Rielen” in Kasterlee, BELGIUM by Studio Associato Bernardo Secchi – Paola Viganò

Wednesday, April 1st, 2015

Article source: Studio Associato Bernardo Secchi – Paola Viganò

De Hoge Rielen is a place for civic and ecological education in the 300-hectare forest of a former military base. The O-shaped “Hostel Wadi” encircles part of the pine forest, retained as a memento of a disappearing artificial landscape that is rapidly transforming into broad leaf vegetation. A circular, ever variable winter garden towards the pine forest acts as a space of appropriation and continuity between interior and exterior, between groups and the individual. The architecture explores relationships and shared space: the enjoyment of the view occurs on a collective terrain.

Fangsuo Book Store in Chengdu, China by Chu Chih-Kang Space Design Co. Ltd

Sutra Depository

Taiwanese designer Chih-Kang Chu was inspired by the history of Xuanzhang, a famous Chinese Buddhist monk in Tang dynasty; he resided and practiced Buddhism in Daci Temple before he went on a spiritual journey to India. Fangsuo Book Store is located at the underground level of the commercial streets, which surrounds the Daci Temple. Therefore he had a bold idea of creating a modern underground “Sutra Depository”. Sutra depository is a private place to store all kinds of knowledge, such as books, sutras, and letters in ancient China. Many raw materials and techniques were used to resemble the scene of an ancient sutra depository, for example, concrete columns with large cutting surfaces, bookcases in the loft, the bridge and catwalk across the bookcases.

RENOVA STORE & THEATRE in Torres Novas, Portugal by Paulo Henrique Durão, Architect

Wednesday, April 1st, 2015

Article source: Paulo Henrique Durão, Architect

There was, from the beginning, the intent to work this project as a machine, a TIME CAPTURING MACHINE. This condition was naturally the result of the place, the context and the industrial spirit, that penetrated the imagination. Condition to which it was added the will to capture, within the project, time and its flow. A flow of time and light into the spaces that would say – the architecture captures time, architecture captures the flow of time.

Multifunctional Sports Hall in Cluj-Napoca, Romania by DICO și ȚIGĂNAȘ

Wednesday, April 1st, 2015

Article source: DICO și ȚIGĂNAȘ

Cluj – Napoca is a city of young people with 25% of its population studying in universities. Student life means also sports and the tradition is consistent. The new Multifunctional Sports Hall is the newest piece of public infrastructure for training, championships and cultural events, in a building conceived to be part of an ensemble together with Cluj Arena, the soccer and athletics stadium also designed by Dico and Tiganas and opened in 2011. Both objectives have generated new public spaces relating the Central Garden of the City with the river Some banks promenades, towards a Sports park and another public garden in a sequence of public spaces of almost 2 kilometers. The envelope of the building is a simple box including another box which contains the main hall, of 7.000 seats and up to 10.000 people for concerts. The facade is an assemblage of layers reflecting and transmitting the light into the foyers inside. The outer mask is mesh of parametrically distorted rectangles inspired by the nets used in several ball sports. The perforated steel plates are forming 3D pyramids reflecting the sky and the sun at every time in different angles and colored effects. The building has a permanent dialogue with the people from the street through the challenge to read the geometry of the facades, being the same time introverted. Inside the public will be guided by 4 thematic colors corresponding with the cardinals. The main hall is a stage and a backstage in the same time, bringing together the public and the performers in a black box with all equipments apparent but camouflaged. From shinning white with golden accents to dark grey and black ambiance, from outside to inside and backwards, architecture is built by light and colors.

SAILING SCHOOL IN SOTOGRANDE, CADIZ by Héctor Fernández Elorza/HFE Arch. & Carlos García Fernández

Wednesday, April 1st, 2015

Article source: Héctor Fernández Elorza/HFE Arch. & Carlos García Fernández

The sailing school for the Sotogrande´s Royal Maritime Club is located in an ideal position, between the marina and the catamarans´ beach.

The project is linked to the stone jetty spanning longitudinally over the promenade in the north side of the beach. The structure seemingly levitates from the ground, standing gently in the sand, as if it were a catamaran. Due to the limited dimensions of the school and its facilities it is necessary the interposing of a larger element to create more visibility for the building. The pergola, constructed in front of the school, unifies all the project elements while also creating a shaded threshold, covering the exterior from direct sun exposure, stretching towards the southern end of the building. Seen from a distance, the school becomes a landmark near the port entrance.
