workhouse de scheepvaart in Schoten, Belgium by HUB

Wednesday, August 13th, 2014

Article source: HUB

The workhouse is part of a complex situated alongside the canal which has a very original and distinct character thanks to its special typology and materialisation. Unlike traditional industrial ‘boxes’, the workhouse’s programmatic mix is rather peculiar: it includes a garage, workshops, offices and a caretaker’s residence.

Reconstruction of the Square in Frydlan, Czech Republic by balda—architekt & atakarchitekti

Wednesday, August 13th, 2014

Article source: balda—architekt & atakarchitekti

The main idea behind the design of the reconstructed square in Frýdlant was to create an open, unobstructed public space – a square that allows residents and visitors to enjoy all types of activities.

The use of three types of paving tiles, two types of stone and the patterns in which these were laid differentiates various types of spaces on the square. With the exception of the parking lot, the square was realised as a barrier-free space.

G-ROC in Barcelona, Spain by Nook Architects

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

Article source: Nook Architects

Just when we thought that we had closed a cycle which CASA ROC, TWIN HOUSE, and ROC CUBE, one of the old apartments on the same building became vacant ahead of what was expected, so G-ROC became our fourth intervention on the building.  With three similar interventions finished, it was easy to identify a common denominator in terms of solutions, therefore defining and strengthening the distinguishing traits of this assignment.

FRAME in Nakano, Japan by APOLLO Architects & Associates

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

Article source: APOLLO Architects & Associates

For FRAME, a low cost and short construction period were realized by substituting regular wooden frameworks for exposed concrete with FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic) that can be converted.

This house, with a studio for a husband who is a fashion photographer, is located in an area with flooding risks from torrential rains. Therefore, the entrance level is raised by 800 mm. The studio level on the first floor is lowered to maintain the ceiling height.
