MORRIS HOUSE in Los Angeles, California by Martin Fenlon Architecture

Friday, July 10th, 2015

Article source: Martin Fenlon Architecture

This project is the articulation of an ideal put into action. A polished steel circle, gently overs over the public plaza. The size of the circle exceeds the given area of the plaza, so one end lifts up so that the rest of the circle can comfortably situate itself into the given area. In doing this, two very different conditions are negotiated and resolved, both in a literal and figurative sense.

The polished steel top surface of the circle reflects its surroundings, bringing the sky above down to the ground below.

Vega Cottage in Norway by Kolman Boye Architects

Friday, July 10th, 2015

Article source: Kolman Boye Architects

The house stands on the island of Vega in the Norwegian archipelago not far from the polar circle. The site is distinctive for its grand and harsh northern landscape with wide panoramas of the Norwegian Sea and the jagged mountains rising from it. Seemingly growing from the landscape, the house sits on a rock beneath a granite shoulder negotiating the uneven terrain. As not to disturb the dominant view towards the sea, access to the house is given through a narrow natural ravine densely grown with gnarled birch shrubs and laid out with sea-sand from the nearby shore. The surrounding landscape remains untouched and wild. The large windows of the house face three directions, each with its strong unique characteristic. They are simple and robust in detailing and the optically white glass conveys undisturbed frames of the ocean, the mountain range and the bedrock. Organised on two levels adapting to the terrain, the plan is compact, providing generous social spaces within a limited floor area. The upper level is comprised of smaller scale bedrooms and family rooms, whereas the lower level is a large gallery-like space structured around a stone hearth. Completed in linseed oil painted pine with untreated birch skirting, frames and reveals – the interior is kept subtle with a character of being hand-built – promoting tactile qualities and the attractive patina developed over time.

Article source: BAST (Bureau Architectures Sans Titre)

A “Chartreuse” is a renovated while fundamentally changing its organization. The initial functions are reversed. The living areas are located on the first floor to enjoy the views and the sun terrace and the spaces at night find their place at the court. The entrance is directly upstairs through the terrace. Volumes added over time abruptly are coated wood stained black, seeking to make clear the body of old buildings in value. Accompanying this process, the private courtyard is widely planted to create a breath in this very mineral island and participate in the management of natural opposite.

BEAUTY LIBRARY in Tokyo, Japan by Nendo

Thursday, July 9th, 2015

Article source: Nendo

A composite store that consists of a specialty boutique for organic cosmetics and a café, tucked away on a street behind Aoyama-Street. For a woman to enhance her beauty, a close linkage between inner and outer body care is required. We therefore designed a service and space based on a concept that fuses to the maximum the features of cosmetics with food & drink. One is able to leaf through information on various products using a tablet and casually try out every single product in the store as if ordering a beverage, while enjoying your drink and food that enhances beauty from within. What’s more, QR codes are placed alongside each product, which enables customers to take home the information about that product on their mobile device and purchase them online later. In this way, the store not only sells cosmetic products, but is also a place where knowledge relating to them can be obtained. Therefore it can be described as a “library” like space with well-organized wooden shelves. Moreover, a “self-study room” feature was added amongst the shelves, with in-built café tables and bracket lights. The logo was designed to give an image of a square bookshelf filled with letters. In addition an “annex” hidden across the courtyard was designed so as not to just function as a café, but as a space that can serve as a party room, and hold small events and workshops.
