Article source: Sanjay Puri Architect

An old factory warehouse was stripped off its external walls to allow the insides to be infused with natural light and create a view of the large trees along the road from its internal spaces that were transformed to a restaurant and a nightclub.
The upper level with a better view, houses a restaurant space and the lower level opening into an outdoor patio is a nightclub.

CITY CULTURAL CENTER in Taichung, Taiwan by d INKOFF Architects & Engineers

Friday, October 17th, 2014

Article source: d INKOFF Architects & Engineers

The site of Taichung’s new Cultural Center still reflects its recent history as an airbase. Bulldozers move and gather broken slabs of runway concrete, the weeds growing among them testifying to the change which is occurring.  Moving into the realm of the aircraft that it once served, the site itself will become 3-dimensional, rising to serve the new age of Taichung.

The Kežmarská Hut in Mountains High Tatras, Slovakia by ATELIER 8000

Friday, October 17th, 2014

Article source: ATELIER 8000

Architecture

ATELIER 8000 participated in the international architectural competition for a new Kežmarská chata (the Kežmarská Hut) in the High Tatras.

The competition entry developed by our studio proposes a succinct shape of a simple cube which is seated on one of its vertices and aims at inducing a feeling of lightness and randomness in the observer. Due to its position within the landscape the cuboid evokes an erratic block left behind by the retreating glacier. In the context of mountain peaks the sharp edges of the building merge into the outline of the neighbouring rocks when viewed from distance and thus naturally join the landscape of the site.

Arvo Pärt Centre in Laulasmaa Villae, Estonia by AZPML

Friday, October 17th, 2014

Intensifying the Sensorial

The Arvo Pärt Centre will be an instrument to make the landscape sing.
The Northern Estonian Forest is full of music: the sorrow of the Southern wind, the crackling of the branches, the whispering of the leaves, the screeching of the swallows, the silence of the snow… Perhaps the remote singing of a Runic tune… The Baltic singing traditions are inevitably linked to the Estonian nature, and the Arvo Pärt Centre should become an opportunity to evidence that relation, to make it physical.

Lasalle Waterworks Building in Montreal, Canada by Affleck de la Riva architects

Wednesday, October 15th, 2014

Article source: Affleck de la Riva architects

The history of civilisations and cities are intrinsically tied to the presence of water.  Ancient civilisations grew up in fertile river valleys and the development of cities depended on the ready availability of water for both potable use and public sanitation.  The infrastructure used to control and distribute water in the urban environment has a long and distinguished architectural history.
