IN SUSPENSION in Montreal, Canada by Naturehumaine Architecture

Saturday, May 30th, 2015

Article source: Naturehumaine Architecture

The client wants to transform the last two levels of a building to create living spaces for her two athletically inclined children, who are now grown adults. The primary goal is to create a shared living space in which all utilitarian functions are shared but which still allows each person to have privacy. The architectural concept consists in removing the floor currently separating the two levels to create a wide-open space in which two large boxes appear to float in mid-air. These suspended boxes, adorned with unfinished plywood panels, each contain a bedroom and a bathroom. This configuration creates three gaps, each being two floors high; the centre gap becomes a physical exercise room with a pair of gymnastics rings. The whole structure is connected lengthwise by a block that is painted black; the block accommodates different services, including stairways, a shower room and part of the kitchen. A large island with unfinished wood painted white delineates the kitchen space, with sliding lacquered bookshelves underneath the wooden boxes.

NDBS in Paris, France by Atelier Zündel Cristea

Saturday, May 30th, 2015

Article source: Atelier Zündel Cristea

AZC’s project for Notre-Dame de Bon Secours had to manage two major issues. Firstly, it involved rebuilding within the urban fabric of the city by reshaping an occupied site in order to give it greater clarity and adapting it to today’s urban requirements. Secondly, the consideration of how to integrate vulnerable or aging populations into the city, and how this should be addressed architecturally.

One Column House in Río Negro, Argentina by NE—AR Nixdorff Etchegorry Architecture Research

Saturday, May 30th, 2015

Article source: NE—AR Nixdorff Etchegorry Architecture Research

The existing summer house was lacking of optimum spatial and functional distribution conditions that could fulfill the needs and the ways that the house was used and experienced: the house was sitting far away from the lake shore neglecting the most privileged views towards the lake and its landscape, while at the same time both neighbor houses at the sides block the vistas towards the lake since their footprints were settled closer to the lake shore. Besides, the interior spaces were characterized by a deep dark dinning/ living area with limited relation to the outside.

Alto El Golf in Santiago, Chile by Handel Architects

Saturday, May 30th, 2015

Article source: Handel Architects

Alto El Golf is a312,000 sq. ft. (29,000 m²) office building, recently completed in the El Golf section of Santiago.

For this project, we strove to rethink the standard office typology. Santiago has a mild climate and the Chileans embrace nature and the outdoors. In addition, the site is surrounded by streets on three of its sides, generating an isle condition with ideal sun and visual exposures. The resultant design is a series of irregularly scaled, shifted volumes that replace the static hierarchies of the hermetic box, creating a variety of outdoor terraces that allow for greenery and social interaction. The building also represents our thinking on the changing nature of the workplace environment, where utilizing these types of spaces is an integral part of daily life.

Hoekenrodeplein in Amsterdam, Netherlands by KARRES+BRANDS

Saturday, May 30th, 2015

Article source: KARRES+BRANDS

Hoekenrodeplein forms the link between the Amsterdam Port shopping centre and the Arena Boulevard. With the redevelopment of the New Amsterdam Building, the square has been developed as one of the final phases of the Zuidoost Centre Area. The existing, U-shaped building th at wraps around the square was expanded on the ground and first floors, and now accommodates public functions, such as a hotel and hospitality facilities. This redevelopment, along with the desire of the municipality to also allow events to take place on the square, made it necessary to revise the earlier design by karres+brands from 2006.

Pelicano House in Cariló, Argentina by Estudio Galera Arquitectura

Saturday, May 30th, 2015

Article source: Estudio Galera Arquitectura

The project was designed around a specific design problem:  to satisfy functional, aesthetic, and semantic needs.

The house, situated on a 1032 m2 corner lot in the city of Cariló, is lifted above the natural terrain level due to the low height of the terrain and the area’s restrictions on modifying the natural topography. This creates an indirect link -visual rather than functional- between the house and the lot.
