Mercator Center Maribor in Slovenia by Studio Kalamar

Saturday, December 8th, 2012

Article source: Studio Kalamar

Mercator Centre Maribor is located in a densely populated part of Maribor, which distinguishes it from typical suburban retail centres. The large centre is therefore more open, has several entrances, oriented not only to visitors who come by car but also to pedestrians. Entrances are typologically accentuated and stand out from the neutral sheath. They lead into interior malls and squares, creating an urban experience of a real city. With the uncontrolled versatility of visual impulses from the shops left and right we devoted our attention to design of the floor and ceiling, which bring some architectural articulation into the diversified space. The floor is defined by sand-coloured ceramics with a diagonal darker path leading from one side to the other and back.

Boekenberg Park in Deurne, Belgium by OMGEVING

Saturday, December 8th, 2012

Article source: OMGEVING

Working in a historical context, of the continental Europe where the architecture of the past is still very much present, architects are often faced with the question of whether they should restore the physical or rehabilitate the conceptual. This question came to the fore in response to the combined decision of the city of Antwerp and the heritage committee to rehabilitate the historical Boekenberg Park in Deurne. Within the framework of a public-private partnership, the office OMGEVING was appointed to give shape to the new ambitions of the city.

Basic volume, installations and construction of the restaurant space were predefined with the building project, our task was to optimize the secondary space areas and create a new, distinctive restaurant ambient which would serve as a basis for further chain expansion as well as for renovations of existing restaurants.

Ca’Diego in Tenerife, Spain by Equipo Olivares Arquitectos

Saturday, December 8th, 2012

Article source: Equipo Olivares Arquitectos

The situation of the plot, with frontage across Las Mercedes Road and back towards the rustic landscape, the temperature conditions and humidity of the area, all together, clearly defined our approach to the project. Furthermore, the promoters asked for a modest house but with personality, on a modest budget. Thus, a compact volume is raised, trying to minimize its perimeter and therefore heat loss from inside.

650㎡ grass land with moving site of Mt.Fuji and Enoshima.

We thought of using up the grass land for a place to stay by studding 22 huts. Architecture which people can get in and those which people cannot get in are treated the same.

A plan is called a map and by using this place the map is updated overtime.

Hue Plus in Tokyo, Japan by Schemata Architects

Friday, December 7th, 2012

Article source: Schemata Architects

The alternative space Hue plus is a series of facilities seamlessly integrated into the photo studio, where the visual expression of ‘eating’ is the particular subject of photographic exploration. Unlike an ordinary photo studio that is a closed box to be used merely as a shooting equipment, Hue plus is an office space, a cafe, a library and a kitchen that the users have control over, making them feel like staying longer for its own sake and enjoy the experience. Hue plus embraces its users by enabling them to change it as they feel fit. The relaxed atmosphere offers further possibilities of open and vibrant communications to stir up the users’ creative minds and fresh ideas about ‘eating’.

Breeze in Setagaya, Tokyo by ARTechnic architects

Friday, December 7th, 2012

Article source: ARTechnic architects

A building that sits in mute repose, like an impassive signpost.

In seeking to realize such a building, which becomes part of the scenery around it, acting as part of the backdrop for passers-by, I felt that I needed to create an exterior that was distinct from the standard architectural lexicon.
