Kaupunkiympäristötalo – A New Hub for Helsinki’s Urban Environment Departments in Finland by Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018

Article source: Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects

Helsinki-based Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects have been given the green light to begin construction on a new facility which will bring all the offices of the City’s urban environment divisions under one roof. The new office complex will take a new approach to how Helsinki’s city planners, housing specialists and environmental designers tackle issues within the Finnish capital, replacing traditional work spaces with an activity-based work environment. The 41,000m2 new building will have its ground floor almost entirely open to the public, with customer service points, exhibition spaces and a restaurant. At the same time, the design of the rest of the building, primarily offices, puts a heavy emphasis on casual encounters between employees of different departments. Construction is due to begin in December 2017.

Integration into surrounding

The single-storey pavilion is located in the centre of Bertrange, at the crossing of Rue de Luxembourg and Rue de Leudelange. In the context of a redesign of Bertrange’s centre, a new town square is created in close proximity to the town hall and the church with a neighbouring park. The discreet cubic body is located right on the boundary of the square and the park. With its basic dimensions of 28m x 11m, it acts as a mediator between these two key urban features.

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018

Article source: KC Design Studio

This 50-year-old house is located in a high density residence area, with the typical design of three-story townhouse that you see often in Taiwan. Main problems for this rectangular shaped house include poor daylighting, which is common for houses of this specific shape, and the close proximity to neighboring houses, which poses a privacy and security threat. Also, noises from nearby tourism attractions and night markets are a nuisance.
