Church Cloister in Nijmegen, the Netherlands by diederendirrix architects

Friday, April 6th, 2012

Article source: Diederendirrix

In this design, church and cloister become one compact entity. The flowing line from the somewhat closed facade together with the prominent bell tower draws the visitor to the entrance of the church. The Mariakapel is gracefully incorporated into the curve of the facade. Once inside, the colossal building turns out to be a light, modern and multifunctional Roman Catholic centre. The church offers seating to 150 people and a sliding wall creates space for 100 more by opening up the conference room which lies behind.

Article source: CEBRA

Experimentarium the science center in Copenhagen, needs more room and wants more visibility in the public space. However, this has to happen within the footprint of the existing building, a former bottling plant for soft drinks, which means that the only way to extend is by building inwards and upwards.

Sandworm in Wenduine, Belgium by Marco Casagrande

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Article source: Marco Casagrande

Sandworm is an organic structure/space/creature realized on the dunes of the Wenduine coastline, Belgium. The 45 meters long and 10 m wide and high installation moves freely in-between architecture and environmental art and is constructed entirely out of willow following the local knowledge of a continuing interaction between work and environment. Casagrande worked hard with his team of young architects and local experts for 4 weeks in order to create something that he describes as “weak architecture” – a human made structure that wishes to become part of nature through flexibility and organic presence.

PennRose by Han Tang

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Article source: Han Tang

Pennrose combines the zest of a joyful event space with rigorous research into new material and digital fabrication.

Pennrose will immerse the viewer in kaleidoscopic pattern of color created by sunlight filtering through an array of translucent, tinted mylar petals that resemble blossoming flowers of stained glass. the piece functioned as a shade structure. the interior of this experimental installation created a beckoning outdoor room for social interaction and contemplation by changing the space, color and light. during the day as the sun passed overhead, the canopy cast colored fractal light patterns onto the ground while during the night, when standing underneath and gazing upward, the visitor could see the infinite sky.

California Dreaming in Tasmania, Australia by Bild Architecture (designed with Rhino 3D)

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Article source: Bild Architecture

California Dreamingis one of a continuing series of projects exploring adaptations of Australian suburban typologies to contemporary housing requirements. Located in an area of inner-urban Launceston originally developed with inter-war ‘California Bungalow’ type housing, the project adapts and co-ops this typology to contemporary living styles and expectations for a pair of duplex residential units.Unfashionable for many years this area of the city lay dormantafter its initial wave of development, preserving an enclave of inter-war speculative housing. However in recent years, with sudden gentrification, the area has seen a new wave of housing occupying the abundant infill opportunities. These new occupants, reflective of contemporary ways of living and ways of building sit in stark contrast with the area’s original houses.

Bird Watching Spot in Asuncion, Paraguay by Pedro Barrail + Marcelo Barrail + Lourdes Mendez (designed with SketchUp Pro)

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Article source: Pedro Barrail

This project is a bird watching spot. Fundacion milenio and hsbc bank financed it. This place is very important, because asuncion has always been looking away from the river, and with these types of proyects they are finally looking towards the river. This area is a bay, and is very important for bird migration, because hundreds of bird species rest in this area in order to continue their journey, so not only do you see native birds, but also exotic ones. Asuncion has almost lost it’s integration to nature, however, projects like these are trying to strengthen that bond.
