An extension and renovation of a shopping center in Liège, Belgium by JDS Architects

Wednesday, December 29th, 2021

Article source: JDS Architects

CONTEXT:

The project in Belle-ile (Liège) is an extension of an existing shopping center. This shopping center is located between 2 waterways, the river Ourthe and the ‘Canal de l’Ourthe’, which flow into the Meuse a little further. It is a former industrial site that has grown into an urban green space a stone’s throw from the center. The place is popular for shopping, but is also located on the famous RAVeL that runs along the Ourthe. In that regard, it is also an important destination for leisure activities such as cycling, hiking and simply enjoying nature. The Canal de l’Ourthe is now a Natura 2000 site, with beavers resurfacing.

The actual shopping center is a typical peripheral shopping center from the 1990s. It consists of a late post-modern, introverted volume that stands above an enormous parking lot. The footprint of the existing building is approximately 35,000 m² and can be seen as 3 different, unmixed layers: 35,000 m2 of parking on the ground floor, 35,000 m2 of shopping center on level +1 and finally 35,000 m2 of unused roof.

Dysis Chapel of Poly Shallow Sea, Sanya in China by Shanghai United Design Group Co., Ltd

Monday, December 27th, 2021

Article source: Shanghai United Design Group Co., Ltd

“The Moment is Eternity”

Situated on the south edge of mainland China, the project faces the vast South China Sea and embraces the most beautiful sunset. The architects captured the most essential elements of nature, i.e. sea, sky, and sunset, and combined them with two powerful artificial elements: triangle and circle. Erecting between the boundless sea and sky, the measurable building volume reveals poetic expressions of time, eternity and sanctity, warmth and romance, grimness and sublimity, and creates a sense of infinity.

The simple yet compelling triangle structure pierces the sky with strong spirituality, like an eternal monument between the sea and sky. Sunset light shines through the central gap of the structure, materializing the perception of time.

Article source: AI Studo

London-based AI Studio completes ORDYNKA, a high-end residential project in Central Moscow.

The project occupies the site of a famous chocolate factory in the historic heart of Moscow. It consists of seven high-end residential buildings connected by a spacious internal courtyard. The original facades of the factory were renovated to retain its historical appearance. In contrast to the original buildings, the facades facing the courtyard have an emphatically modern design, with polylines, panoramic windows, large modules of white architectural concrete, natural stone and anodized copper. These elements give the development an unequivocally modern character. In addition, ORDYNKA features a carefully restored 19th century merchant mansion, specifically a classic manor house with a portico and two outbuildings.

Memorial

Man transforms the environment, interferes with nature in order to produce spaces that shelter their daily activities. In this process, he causes changes, builds objects, thinks about artifices inserted in the natural environment. This intervention suggests a reflection on the relationship between nature and artifice. Thus, it proposes buildings that are at the same time: artifact and landscape, coverage and relief, shelter and open area.
