8 Octavia in San Francisco, California by STANLEY SAITOWITZ │ NATOMA ARCHITECTS INC.

Friday, April 1st, 2016

Article source: STANLEY SAITOWITZ │ NATOMA ARCHITECTS INC.

The site is where the elevated 101 Freeway connects to the surface streets at Market and becomes Octavia Boulevard – the entrance to north/west sector of San Francisco. The First Baptist Church with its classical façade and strong cornice is one pylon of this entrance.  Mirroring this mass, on the other side of Octavia Boulevard, 8 Octavia completes the gateway. This entry is seen as an opportunity to present our new city, one that folds tradition and innovation.

Article source: Lagula Arquitectes

TYPOLOGY

Effectively, this refurbishment of two apartments in Berga introduces a typology. Ah… then… but…where the hell is my square room? Believe it or not, at first glance one can be tempted to think that we are in front of a special project, site specific, tailored, unique… it is a matter of daring to propose it.

Durban Skytree in South Africa by Tiago do Vale Architects

Tuesday, March 29th, 2016

Article source: Tiago do Vale Architects

Though architecture has always been about dealing with complexity and contradiction -recalling Venturi- 21st century architecture will deal with a very specific set of challenges of growing prominence: how to provide economic housing while increasing density; how to rejuvenate mono-functional city centers in the face of real estate speculation; how to build affordably with sustainability; how to construct bigger with a smaller CO² footprint.

Located in Durban, South Africa, the Skytree proposal tries to give an answer to these points while creating a landmark that relates both to city and landscape scales but equally integrates smoothly into the neighborhood’s scale and life.

Bachelor Pad in Dublin Mountains, Ireland by Box Urban Design Architecture

Friday, March 18th, 2016

Article source: Box Urban Design Architecture

Existing Irish apartments frequently fail to meet the needs of their occupants and are viewed as an inadequate or undesirable housing option. The reconfiguration of existing apartments has the potential to contribute to and improve the existing urban high-density housing stock if exemplary precedents can be established.  This project embodies how a typical city-centre apartment can be reconfigured to meet the specific needs of the occupant and provide a desirable living-environment of architectural, sustainable and social quality.

SOCIAL HOUSING in Bergen, Norway by Rabatanalab (Rocco Salomone)

Thursday, March 17th, 2016

Article source: Rocco Salomone (Rabatanalab)

The project area is situated in a unique area of Bergen in Norway. Located just outside the historic city centre on the south side of Store Lungegårdsvannet near the Møllendal River, the site has a long history as an industrial area, including milling back to the Middle Ages, and storage for the city’s technical department in recent times. Much of the Møllendal area has for decades been inaccessible and unsuited for public use so making a fracture between two parts of the town. The project aims to reconnect and to give continuity to a new territory exploring transitions between land and water; the goal is to create the conditions for regenerating the area into an attractive and active waterfront neighborhood.
