THE APARTMENT in Geneva, Switzerland by BUREAU A

Thursday, March 5th, 2015

Article source: BUREAU A

Within the austerity of Jean Calvin’s protestant city, a tiny “nest” for living can be found. Hidden among the molasses sandstones that typify Geneva’s old town, the small apartment attempts to bring colours to the otherwise cavy and intricate architecture of the XVth century. The apartment has been conceived as a place for intimacy, with some slightly voyeuristic features that help bringing a sparkling feeling and natural light into the deep layout. The visual continuity that crosses the apartment from one façade to the other is set through an important interior window linking the bedroom with the kitchen and the living room. Everything can be seen and observed in one glance.

Apartment remodelling in Prague, Letna by FAM Architekti

Saturday, February 21st, 2015

Article source: FAM Architekti

The 100sqm apartment is located in a functionalist building near Letenske Sady. The building designed by the functionalist architect Jan Gillar was completed in 1938. The apartment was originally designed for a couple with a maid, who had a small room adjacent to the kitchen. The narrow plan spans through the whole apartment block in the form of three large rooms, separated by generous glazed double doors. The centre of the apartment faces a large lightwell clad in ceramic tiles, which allows for cross ventilation and some daylight. The rooms have typical functionalist horizontal windows, with a lower cill in the main living room.

Conversion of Doxiadis Office Building-ATI to Apartment Building in Athens, Greece by Divercity

Friday, February 20th, 2015

Article source: Divercity

An icon of Greek post-war modern architecture, the Doxiadis building, having decayed during the last 20 years, finally came back to life through its conversion into a residential building. This conversion raises crucial questions about the notions of memory, preservation, integration into natural and built environments and innovation inspired by the potential of existing spaces.

Juliette aux combles by L. McComber ltée

Friday, February 20th, 2015

Article source: L. McComber ltée

Juliette aux combles – Transforming an attic into a bookcase – “Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed.”

Subtraction
In approaching this project, we studied the composition of the existing building and identified multiple layers added to one another over time. These additions had compressed the living space since the original construction dating back to 1880. Inside the attic, we found that the current flat roof was built on top of a former sloped roof togetherreaching a thickness of over five feet which was mixed in with layers of tar. Through a subtraction process and by replacing the existing structure with new joists, we gained 5 feet of space, therefore making up a 13 foot height on the third floor. The space of the new master bedroom and artist studio gained in natural light with the integration of a ribbon window where the attic was.
