ROOF EXTENSION in Vienna, Austria by TRIENDL UND FESSLER ARCHITEKTEN ZT OG

Thursday, September 10th, 2015

Article source: TRIENDL UND FESSLER ARCHITEKTEN ZT OG

Increasing urban density:
In addition to numerous technical specifications, the specific structure of the historic building, a very tight budget and local building regulations constitute a strict corset for this roof extension. The basic idea for the design was to reinterpret the spatial qualities of a classical attic. Due to the limited corridor space the apartments have been designed as a zoned “ Loftspace” on two levels. Deep cut in terraces, stairways and spatial requirements of the existing structure (chimneys, fire walls, etc.) give every apartment its own individual quality. From the public entrance floor up to the private gallery level, the functions organize self-explanatory within each unit. All apartments are accessed from the inventory level and spatially structured as duplex apartments. This allows all units north/south or east/west orientation.

867 De Bougainville in Québec, Canada by Bourgeois / Lechasseur architects

Tuesday, September 8th, 2015

Article source: v2com

The project is a complete remodelling of a ground floor apartment in a building dating back to 1924, located in Quebec City’s Montcalm neighbourhood. The clients, a young family, decided to convert the ground floor into their main residence. The space was remodeled to make it airy, bright and more functional. The living areas are spread out through a large linear area crossing the building from east to west. Now the light flows in more freely. During the demolition work, a brick common wall was seen as an element of interest to be kept and enhanced. At the other extremity, a wall of original wooden boards was also kept to provide a touch of warmth to the bedrooms. This wood was also reused for the washroom counter.

Tyche Apartment in Barcelona, Spain by CaSA + Margherita Serboli

Tuesday, September 1st, 2015

Article source: CaSA + Margherita Serboli

The property occupies an art nouveau building of the Eixample district of Barcelona and was fully renovated by CaSA and Margherita Serboli to become the holiday apartment for an Italian family. The original layout wasted considerable space and was poorly orientated. Its longitudinal distribution, forced by the transversal bearing walls, resulted in many densely separated small spaces, spared along a long corridor that isolated the two ends of the apartment.

Departamento Roma Oaxaca in Mexico by Germán Velasco Arquitectos

Sunday, August 30th, 2015

Article source: Germán Velasco Arquitectos

A reorganization of the program of this apartment was done to make the most of the double height and large window of the living dining room and changing the second one to another area to have a more ample entertaining space. The great wall that marks the entrance was left in white and four pieces of the ancient lattice of the perimeter wall of the former UDLA in Mexico City — very close by— were hanged on it. The geometry of the pieces, the grand window and the staircase take advantage of the space and welcome into a more intimate area filled with texture and color where the sitting area was located made of a careful selection of lounge chairs and original pieces.
