Viktoria – Multi-purpose building in Bratislava, Slovakia by Grido, architektura & design

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

Article source: Grido, architektura & design

At some point, every project is subject to compromise. A compromise between the developer’s requirements and the site’s potential, between the architect’s idea and the construction company’s abilities. Architecture is about finding a compromise.
Multipurpose building Viktoria is located on a complicated site in Bratislava’s city center – at the frontier of two different worlds – of an active boulevard on one side and of a quiet residential area on the other.

Curtain Apartments in Wolli Creek, Australia by Tony Owen Partners

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

Article source: Tony Owen Partners

The new Curtain Apartment building by Tony Owen Partners Has just been approved at Wolli Creek near Sydney Airport. The 200 apartment building is located at the waterfront and has panoramic water views of Sydney’s skyline. The Curtain also fronts onto a large park and Botany Bay. The design is unique in that all apartments face north to the view. This ensures all units have wide frontages and all rooms have balconies to take advantage of the site. In addition, almost all are ‘thru-units’ running north to south. This is achieved using open rear access corridors on the south which are accessed from external, lift towers. As a result all of the units are naturally ventilated. This minimizes energy costs making this a highly sustainable design.

Redline (Construction of 59 housing units) in La Seyne-sur-Mer, France by Pietri Architectes

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

Article source: Pietri Architectes

The obsession to always be able to see the sea from where we live on the coast guides our pens from the first sketches and never fails to inspire another way of building. As such the Redline plot could not have tolerated a single, solid block, which would have obstructed the views of the surrounding housing and prevented half of the 59 housing units from having a view of the sea. Using this site survey as a starting point, and setting our sights on the north where the Bay of Toulon is curled up, a building that splits in two along a patio running from east to west was drawn.

URCA APARTMENT in SugarLoaf, Guanabara Bay by STUDIO ARTHUR CASAS

Sunday, September 21st, 2014

Article source: STUDIO ARTHUR CASAS

This penthouse in Rio’s Urca neighborhood has an extraordinary location, between the Sugar Loaf and Guanabara Bay. The client bought an apartment that was in terrible conditions, but with an exceptional potential for transformation. The project was guided by two complementary ideas: to create a pathway of discovery of the landscape on both sides, the bay and the mountain, and to bring as much light as possible to the three floors.
