Residential – Disappearing Corridor in Hong Kong, China by Bean Buro

Sunday, January 22nd, 2017

Article source: Bean Buro

Bean Buro has designed a 1,485sqft (138sqm) apartment for a young family of four in the south side of Hong Kong Island. Unchanged since the early 1990’s, the apartment featured closed off rooms accessed by a long corridor, and large windows looking over the ocean.

Retreating from Hong Kong’s busy lifestyle, the apartment’s entrance is a semi-enclosed foyer which marks the threshold between inside and outside.

Designed with a comfortable seat, playful hooks and concealed shoes and coat cabinet, it allows for a moment of pause and appreciation of the home.

Article source: v2com

This semi-rural/semi-urban new alternative development of 30 hectares is located in the governorate of Manouba on a hill near the Medjerda river on the South West edge of Jedeida city limits. Its eco-friendly planning design preserves and utilizes an existing olive grove estate, by placing small individual pavilions for collective housing and service facilities within its 4 475 existing salvaged olive trees and by planting tall sized trees plus a wild botanical garden for more local bio-diversity.

Graça Apartment in Lisbon, Portugal by fala atelier

Friday, January 13th, 2017

Article source: fala atelier

The apartment lies in an unremarkable building in Lisbon. Its obsolete fragmented typology presented a series of small rooms, some devoid of natural light, and an impractical exterior bathroom. The intervention aimed to erase these faults and to clarify the use of the available surface: a gently curved wall was extended from façade to façade, defining the limit between a vast common space and the different private rooms.

Duplex & the City in Sydney, Australia by Luigi Rosselli Architects

Thursday, January 12th, 2017

Article source: Luigi Rosselli Architects

Equivalent to the brownstones of New York, this interwar duplex is a humane scale solution to housing in the Sydney city fringes.

Shoulder to shoulder with other apartment buildings, the original 1920s two-storey flats were transformed into a four storey block with a basement carpark and cellar, a ground floor garden apartment and a two-storey penthouse.

The scissor balconies of the back elevation are angled to offer side views while maintaining the building’s rear alignment with the neighbouring properties. The Council thought but resisted the tempation to emacitate the elevation by cutting it back to a flat façade. K5 Urban Apartments in Oslo, Norway by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter AS

Sunday, January 8th, 2017

Article source: Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter AS

The project is sited in an urban block that remains a rare example of the intimate blend of housing and small-scale industry typical of the nineteenth century. The new structure was designed with special appreciation of these environs. The apartments have differing housing typologies of simplex and duplex units, and they benefit from a study of the interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces. The building’s design is characterized by a distinct architectonic form with functional solutions, thoughtful details, and contemporary overall expression.
