skinnySCAR in Rotterdam, The Netherlands by Gwendolyn Huisman & Marijn Boterman

Tuesday, March 7th, 2017

Article source: Gwendolyn Huisman & Marijn Boterman

The skinnySCAR project of architect couple Gwendolyn Huisman and Marijn Boterman shows how forgotten empty spaces in the city can be used. Each city has neglected spaces like this, that are unused and underrated. These gaps can be upgraded to complete the urban fabric, while giving it a boost and creating possibilities for new forms of urban living for the adventurous ones. As young designers, Gwendolyn and Marijn are not limited by design traditions and conventions, and they saw the potential and challenge of a narrow gap with extreme proportions in an old Rotterdam neighborhood. In 2012 the process to convince the landowners to sell the narrow plot started, so they could develop it into their own home. After a short construction period of only 4 months in 2015/2016, the contractor left them an unfinished structure. They’ve been finishing the entire interior themselves since then and their design ideas are becoming manifest.

Industrial Loft II in São Paulo, Brazil by Diego Revollo Arquitetura

Thursday, March 2nd, 2017

Article source: Diego Revollo Arquitetura

This 100 m2 Loft with structure and apparent installations is located in the noble neighborhood of Morumbi, in São Paulo.

Although the aesthetic appeal of New York sheds converted into housing in the 1970s is the main justification for the male audience in explaining their desire for this style of property, Diego Revollo, who is knowledgeable about this repertoire and with some other lofts in his portfolio, knows that this profile prioritizes good materials and functionality.

Morris Law in Gothenburg, Sweden by Bornstein Lyckefors Architects

Tuesday, February 28th, 2017

Article source: Bornstein Lyckefors Architects

Lawyer’s Office Morris Law has the stated ambition to reformulate what business law might mean. The guiding principles of the company’s values are concepts such as “transparency”, “efficiency”, “excellence” and “mindfulness”. Our interpretation of this was to create an open and social workspace without clear hierarchies. One example is the entrance lobby, which is surrounded by a wooden structure made of maple with shelves, mirrors, cork and brass net, acts both as a workspace for the employees, as well as a place to meet customers. Another example is the absence of cellular offices; designing all workplaces the same size and instead divide them with the help of wooden frames, which are also made of maple. Felt, mirrors and cork inside these frames create privacy and noise reduction.

The office of Morris Law is today a work environment without clear hierarchies, where the meetings between employees and customers are in focus.

Courtyard House in Toh Yi Rd, Singapore by Ming Architects

Tuesday, February 28th, 2017

Article source: Ming Architects

Flanked between the koi pond and the swimming pool, the double volume courtyard – a fulcrum to the house, was introduced to break the monotony of spaces in this linear house. Horizontal and vertical movements are endless and ample daylight floods the key living spaces. A 3-storey high feature steel staircase floats above the koi pond, with a vertical feature wall of black river pebbles as its backdrop. A slim bridge suspends over the courtyard and ties the front and rear wings of the house.

ICE Krakow Convention Centre in Poland by Ingarden & Ewý Architects

Saturday, February 25th, 2017

Article source: Ingarden & Ewý Architects

ICE Kraków Congress Centre is a modern, world-class venue dedicated to culture – music, opera, ballet, theatre – and congresses. Designed at the highest standards of acoustics and mechanics. Besides the three main halls with 1915, 600, and 300 seats, the shell holds a multifunctional conference space of 550m2. ICE Kraków stands in the most prestigious location in Poland: opposite Wawel Castle, a location that influenced main design decisions. Hiding a multi-story foyer open to a panorama of Kraków, the Vistula embankment façade is spectacularly transparent. The outer shell combines glass, ceramics, and aluminium, with colours ceramic tiles reflecting those of the interior: red of the Auditorium Hall, graphite of Theatre Hall, white of the foyer, and the silvery aluminum used for the roof.

Little Bao at 72 Courtyard in Bangkok, Thailand by JJA / Bespoke Architecture

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017

Article source: JJA / Bespoke Architecture

The simple Hong Kong brick-and-mortar shop which opened in 2013, has been described by DestinAsian magazine as a “1950s American diner”, where the “pink-neon logo” and the “retro-tiled floor” suggests a Hong Kong style cafe where “Wong Kar-Wai meets Grease.” It is from this basis that designer, James JJ Acuna of JJA / Bespoke Architecture formulated the basis of their second global location, at the 72 Courtyard complex in Bangkok.

Hansen, Mixed Use Building in Athens, Greece by AREA, Architecture Research Athens

Tuesday, February 21st, 2017

Article source: AREA, Architecture Research Athens

This project redefines the mixed-use housing typology of the “polykatoikia”, ubiquitous in Greek cities, in one of the most dense urban neighborhoods of Athens’ center, Patissia. An L-shaped plan is dictated by site orientation and adjacent building mass, creating a small garden to the South. The vertical arrangement of different programs, typically integrated behind a uniform facade of duplicate floors, is articulated here as a “sectional” facade: individual floor levels appear to extend different lengths along the street, varying the relationship of closed to open space at each floor. Along the street, the mass of the building is lifted to provide broad visual access to the private garden, and allow room for two vehicles. At each level of the building, an exterior or transparent space \”bridges\” the street to the backyard along the East party line, whereas the most sheltered interior spaces are concentrated along the opposite party line. This results in a double strategy. On the one hand, the careful manipulation of the building code incorporates a pilotis, a pergola and covered outdoor spaces, creating a porous civic facade that subverts the requirement for the building’s mass to continue that of its neighbors. On the other hand, the near-absence of protruding balconies brings the building’s interior closer to the realm of the street.
