N-House in Fukuoka, Japan by Uchida Takahisa Architect Design Office

Cantilevered closets

The site is located on the soft ground near the lower basin of the big river. The client of this house decided to build one-storied house because the site area is wide enough, but it was necessary to reduce the foundation area because of the construction budget. So I arranged closets in the outer periphery, and attached them by the cantilevering structure.

The Shanghai Library East Hall in China by nARCHITECTS

Wednesday, October 19th, 2016

Article source: nARCHITECTS

nARCHITECTS has won the 1st prize (Concept Design) in the 2016 International Young Architects Design Competition for the 110,000m2 Shanghai Library East Hall. The competition, which generated over 200 entries, was held by Shanghai Pudong New Area People’s Government, aimed at enhancing Shanghai’s unique cultural influence and promoting qualities of public lives. The library proposal entitled “Library as Home” envisions a library that feels like a large house for all, with a rich variety of environments that Shanghai’s citizens could appropriate as their own. As such, our design is inspired by the intimate connections between people, media and nature in libraries of the ancient world.

Bellevue First Congregational Church in Washington by atelierjones

Tuesday, October 18th, 2016

Article source: atelierjones

The challenge was to convert a typical multi-tenant office space into a space capable of creating awe. To do this, the architects had to bring life to the existing beige box by breaking it open and allowing the diffuse Northwest light filter in. Historically, light has played a significant role in marking a transcendent space, and this design captures the richness of indirect, cast light reflected off natural surfaces. For the new Bellevue First Congregational Church, the new soaring sanctuary is filled with this indirect light, which subtly changes throughout the day and seasons.

Spira in Jönköping, Sweden by Wingårdhs

Sunday, October 9th, 2016

Article source: Wingårdhs

Spira is twisted as a spiral to catch the attention of the eye as well as the body; transparent, to turn every side into a front; compact, to be efficient and sparse; meandering, to create expectation.

The performing arts centre Spira in the city of Jönköping is a regional scene for music and theater in the southern part of Sweden. It is a culturally vivid part of the country, but the performing arts have not had a permanent stage so far. Our proposal is a result of a winning competition from 2005 and the house was inaugurated on 11.11.11.

Seagull House in Guanacaste, Costa Rica by Indigo Arquitectura

Friday, October 7th, 2016

Article source: Indigo Arquitectura

Casa Gaviota (Seagull House) is a project developed through a thorough site analysis and conscious awareness of the environment. Located in a mountain surrounded by topographic depressions, a mellow river and very close to the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, it stands lightly and volant on the terrain holding more than 80% of its areas in the air. It touches the ground only as needed, reducing the humidity and soil sealing and maximizing the natural ventilation through the project. The precise east – west orientation allows Casa Gaviota to fully open its north facade providing all the indirect lightning for the house and creating different environments that dramatically change throughout the day. A nearby river that refreshes and nourishes the flora and fauna of the place can be appreciated visually and aurally from the deck. The house stands at the height of the canopy of the trees. The opening between the two modules allows the user to continue its path through the mountain, the same path that existed before the house was built. The house does not interfere between nature and oneself.
