Light-House in Hsinchu, Taiwan by Shen Ting Tseng Architects

Light-House is located in Hsinchu County, Taiwan. This multi-storied residential building block is designed in consideration of common Taiwanese terrace style houses. This project seeks to rethink the fundamentals of this particular housing model and intends to reinvigorate its underlining idea as “Lian-dong” (describing a continuous housing block) and “Tou-tian” (terrace houses describing buildings with roof spaces open to the sky) in the design approach.

TREC – Training Recreation Education Center in Newark, New Jersey by ikon.5 architects

The City of Newark has long struggled to come back from the brink since losing its industrial base in the 1950s, which resulted in decreased city revenue, increased unemployment, deplorable housing conditions and ultimately fueled the 1967 riots. Since that time, the city has attempted several “comebacks” floating a host of broad-brush proposals for renewal many of which failed. Today cities are trying a different tact, finding seeds of hope and renewal in incremental rather than sweeping-change, embarking on small scaled, targeted projects led by architects capable of bringing to these ‘wicked problems’ fresh ideas and innovative approaches in the hope of jumpstarting communities in need.

Double Duplex in Toronto, Canada by Batay-Csorba Architects

The Double Duplex was created in response to the cities growing need for alternative housing models due to the rising cost of urban real estate and the need for urban densification within Toronto’s established residential neighbourhoods. A proliferation of high and mid-rise condo’s have densified the urban core and serve as the predominant model for entry level home ownership within the city. However, very few new low rise infill models of densification or affordable living within Toronto’s sought after historic residential neighbourhoods have been developed.

Nanjing Financial City II (Third plot) in China by gmp · Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner

With a height of 411 meters, the building comes under the high-rise building category of the “super-high skyscrapers” of the CTBUH, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. This means that the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners are putting up their highest building ever on the third plot. Design activities for the first two building plots (A and B) had already started after the gmp master plan obtained first prize in the competition at the beginning of last year. Now the client has also given the go-ahead for the third building plot (C). The site lies to the south-west of the inner city next to the trade exhibition grounds, and is the key project for linking two urban axes of the Hexi New Town development.

Care Housing Boxmeer in The Netherlands by Zecc Architecten BV

Zecc designed an apartment building with 46 apartments commissioned by housing association Mooiland Vastgoed. The project concerns social housing for people with a need for limited residential care. The building is part of an ensemble of connected buildings and is designed to accent its height in the area. The building has a basement of curved masonry with a broad main entrance area. From the ground up the sculptural masonry transforms itself into an angular freeform with emphasized vertical elements.

Transforma Art Studios in Torres Vedras, Portugalby by Pedro Gadanho + CVDB Arquitetos Associados

This project is based on the adaptation of a number of buildings in the historic centre of Torres Vedras so as to accommodate an innovative arts centre dedicated to music, performance, new media and the visual arts. The ambitions of the young institution, as well as the willingness to integrate and rehabilitate the urban ensemble – including a small housing scheme complete with its own street – determined that the Transforma headquarters should play on the ambiguity between public and private. While a cafeteria in the lower floor potentially expands onto the adjacent plaza through the main entrance, a newly minted urban pathway extends the existing alley to connect different levels of the city. Offering diverse spatial experiences, including the possibility of public passage, this path gives access to the multipurpose, kidney shaped auditorium that constitutes the central core of the arts organization. In general, public facades are minimally transformed, while new internal “organs” push against the old walls as a set of volumes and capsules linked to new functions and uses. Different colours are used to characterize these capsules as a basic process to claim their presence and exceptional character.

500 unit residential development in Birmingham, England by Architects of Invention

London-based practice Architects of Invention (AI) has submitted a design proposal for 500 residential units in Birmingham’s Digbeth area.

The practice was approached by Chinese private equity fund PGC- Capital whose The Jewel Court, 77 one-two bed luxury apartments, is already on site in Birmingham.

Óscar Romerocollege in Dendermonde, Belgium by De Jong Gortemaker Algra Architects

The south side of the Óscar Romerocollege borders on the historical inner city of Dendermonde. The patchwork sequence of courtyards and streets is typical of this location. Two college buildings have already been built. A further two buildings – a tuition building and a sports complex – will be added and are intended to strengthen the school’s identity. We have extended this objective to include a connection to the historic centre. A connection that has been created by blending into the structure of the public spaces. The existing courtyards have been extended to include two new courtyards and a promenade. The four school buildings, each of which has its own individual appearance, create a powerful rhythm on the north side. This is where the main entrance is located. A covered path connects the existing and new buildings and takes the students past the different courtyards, each of which has its own function and identity.
