Between the city centre and the Rhine River

The former railway head office is on Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer immediately opposite the Rhine River and in immediate vicinity of Cologne’s main railway station, the cathedral and the city centre. There are visual links to the cathedral, the bridge Hohenzollernbrücke, the opposite riverbank as well as beyond the Rhine bend to the more distant office buildings and the Cologne Trade Fair Centre, Koelnmesse. Clearly visible from the other side of the river, Neue Direktion Köln is an important landmark within Cologne’s urban landscape.

Bon-Secours health and social care development in Paris, France by AZC

Sunday, January 8th, 2017

Article source: AZC

The collection of buildings that makes up Notre-Dame de Bon Secours is to be found at 68 Rue des Plantes, in southern Paris’ 14th arrondissement. Bordered to the south and the east respectively by Rue Giordano and Rue des Plantes, the site has an area of almost three hectares. The heritage of this site is a long history of building that began in 1875. The first wings of the hospital and the chapel were soon joined by new buildings in the same architectural style, following an orthogonal plan along two axes, alternating buildings and garden areas. In 1985, demolitions and new constructions broke the architectural coherence and upset the reading and use of the site. The recent transfer of the maternity unit to another hospital (Saint Joseph) provided the opportunity for the organisation to convert the Rue des Plantes site into a leading community healthcare centre, as well as to re-establish a harmonious and functional architectural ensemble. The transformation of the Notre-Dame de Bon Secours site reflects the evolution of healthcare; from the late 19th-century linear building, to the broad floors of modern medical centres. Following the demolition of the most problematic buildings on the site, including the maternity wing, a large building operation was planned in two phases so as to manage re-housing and building on an occupied site. Phase one, now being completed, comprised the construction of a new building to house a 98-bed residential care-home for the elderly and a 64-place crèche. It is built on the site of the demolished maternity wing, in the south-west corner of the plot, on the Rue Giordano Bruno side. The project also involves the renovation of the street-front building of the old nursing school, known as the ‘chateau’, to house a new children’s healthcare centre. The overall programme covers a total surface area of 14,000 sq m (GIA). Phase two, due for completion in 2017, will see the construction of a nursing home for disabled patients at the northern corner of the site by the Rue des Plantes.

A-cero presents one of his latest works. In this case, it is a public building which holds a cultural and leisure center for Getafe village, in the outskirts of Madrid.

The main idea of the project is to reconvert completely a deserted building from years, which in a moment was the municipal market. The plot where is located, it is in the center of the city in the main square where it is also the city council.  The status of the existing building was semiruins and the proposal of the city council was to give to the townspeople a multifunctional center focus above all in cultural events.

OnCube in Shanghai, China by gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects

Friday, January 6th, 2017

Article source: gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects

gmp completes new office complex in China

The OnCube office complex has been completed on the industrial site of the Caohejing company in Shanghai to plans by the architects practice von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The design of the new building has been derived from the basic theme of a square – both in its outer appearance and in its details and landscaping. The strictly geometric double grid of the facade provides a sophisticated visual three-dimensional effect. This gives the solid office block lightness and, within its heterogeneous surroundings, makes it into a landmark that is conspicuous in its precision.

BSU Hamburg in Germany by Sauerbruch Hutton architects

Thursday, January 5th, 2017

Article source: NBK Keramik GmbH

The second largest city in Germany is often referred to as the “gateway to the world”. The Free and Hanseatic City has the largest and most important commercial port in the country and acts as a transport hub for ships from all over the world. Important sea routes to the North and East open out from Hamburg, and major import and export companies, forwarding and shipping companies are based here.

The city on the river Elbe with its green areas and bodies of water, its architecturally impressive cityscape and its Hanseatic flair is also one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. A lively art and cultural scene, shopping and entertainment districts and not least the lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere explain its appeal. And Hamburg is growing – for years its population has been on the rise, and the forecasts suggest a further increase, which needs to be reflected in the city’s building and transport infrastructure.

Tre.3 in Legnago, Italy by Studio Athesis

Sunday, December 25th, 2016

Article source: Studio Athesis

The building is adjacent to the historic city center of Legnago. The project includes a modern re-interpretation of the sixteenth and seventeenth-century buildings situated in the historic centers of our cities. The new volume fits into the already-existing buildings with such proportions as to mediate between the impressive volumes present in the rear part of the parcel and the relatively-small houses overlooking the perimeter. The main façade overlooking Via G. Martino, is marked by full and empty spaces with three full parts separated by two pillared loggias; the building is volumetrically symmetric with respect to the central axis of the main body. The vertical division is also tripartite according to ancient traditions: rustication on the lower part, plaster in the middle with a window-framed cornice at the top (skyline). In the main body are some embedded, proportioned red balconies that become the adornment of the façade. The building slopes down in the rear, this forming terraces at different levels, providing ample, exposed spaces available to users.
