Two historic retail properties in a unique location on Ghent’s Veldstraat and Korenmarkt are revived with a mixed shopping and residential project. Adding to the initial demand for optimisation of the retail space,an opportunity is seized to redevelop the vacant upper floors, with their authentic interiors and stunning city views, into apartments. Combining renovation with new construction, the two corner premises are merged into one project, with a spacious two-level shop premises on the ground floor,and five apartments centred around a communalpatioon the upper floors.
The project takes the form of an urban micro-operation aiming to link a park, that had been isolated until now, and a boulevard running through to the town centre. This has resulted in a pathway being created in the middle of the plot to better make use of its heart and to define an unusual landscape. To either side of this axis, two quite different housing typologies have been built: to the north, a two storey building crossing through the site and, to the south, a series of interleaved houses. Each housing unit is extended by a vast outdoor space positioned either next to the entrance or to the rear of the unit. The most symbolic, being that of the main building, is constructed from a double latticework envelope and, extending the living room, creates an additional space of around 20 m².
A distinctive Edwardian home in north Aberdeenshire was recently given a new lease of life with the addition of an extension inspired by contemporary minimal design. Juxtaposed against the traditional hard wearing granite of the original building, the extension features Kebony cladding which introduces an element of Scandinavian design aesthetic as well as bringing with it all the benefits of resilience and durability that its technology allows. Appearing to ‘float’ in front of a stainless steel mesh, the timberwork gives the building a sense of lightness, contrasting with the solid granite of the main part of the house.
The striking white bus drivers building on the bus station at Amsterdam Central houses a workspace, pantry and a canteen for bus drivers on the first floor. Because the canteen is located on this higher level the drivers have a lot of privacy, with 180 degree views of the bus platform, the river IJ and Amsterdam North. On the ground floor there is space for storage, a technical area and toilets. The bus drivers building has been built three months.

For the first time in decades, Sault College has a new academic building. Essar Hall forms a gateway that announces the new energized spirit for learning at Sault College. Here, much needed new learning spaces support future-forward teaching pedagogies. Organizing the classrooms and labs spaces around common areas that promote casual learning and interdisciplinary idea exchanges emphasizes the connectivity, community, and engagement that generates a clear sense of identity and belonging. Situated prominently at the building entrance is a flexible exhibition hall that links classrooms with aviation and natural resource laboratories, a 100 seat lecture hall and administration support spaces. An additional 8,000 square feet of interactive learning commons is strategically distributed throughout the building providing essential flexible and dynamic learning spaces for students.
There was the existing building between a vineyard and the mountain. It is a plan under the comfortable environment where there is the big park which is famous for Japanese pine, and Mount Fuji is seen over a park from the second floor of the building.
Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower is located in Tokyo’s distinctive Nishi-Shinjuku high-rise district and contains 3 different schools: Tokyo Mode Gakuen (fashion), HAL Tokyo (IT and digital contents) and Shuto Iko (medical treatments and care). The building’s innovative shape and cutting edge façade embodies our unique “Cocoon” concept.
The original notary, which interacts with its surroundings in a very specific way, was put into use only five years ago. Thus it was a mental struggle to respond to the request for an extension. Well conceived design does not tolerate continuation or copy, so a radically different approach was needed. On a six-month period an abstract mirror box on a black base rose along the street. A transparent passageway between these two volumes replaces the former entrance of the building.
Formerly a parking lot on the southeast corner of Fulton and Gough streets, the Drs. Julian + Raye Richardson Affordable Apartments has risen on one of the sites freed for development by the demolition of the collapsed Central Freeway. This five-story building will provide permanent supportive housing for a very-low-income, formerly homeless population.
