Lampwork Lofts in Oakland, California by Levy Design Partners, Inc

Sunday, September 21st, 2014

Article source: Levy Design Partners, Inc

This historically significant 4-story building, constructed of masonry bearing walls and heavy timber, occupies a rectangular 1.5 acre site at 1614 Campbell Street in Oakland, CA. Originally used as an incandescent light factory by General Electric (GE) and designed by the Austin Company, the building construction was completed between 1912 and 1917. The site continued under GE ownership in 1962 when the division closed. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake resulted in the destruction of a north bay of the west wing, not to be rebuilt in the rehabilitation project. The structure is noted for being the first industrial building on the West Coast to employ women.

Tuesday, September 16th, 2014

Article source: COLL-BARREU ARQUITECTOS

The building accommodates the central Public Safety services for a one million people urban area.

The ground on which the building sits was unstable. It was uncertain. It is the result of having quickly filled an open mine, with pits up to 50 m deep, which formed a cavernous place in its physical reality and its memory.

Article source: Daniel HAZANAS

Three periods and three buildings: the Renaudin house, a large 19th-century mansion resting peacefully at the foot of a listed cedar tree, overlooking gently sloping  grounds very close to the town center; a bland extension from the 1980s; and the new building designed by the agency that highlights the grounds’ plant-life heritage and its topography in order to clarify the way this venue is seen and is incorporated into its select environment.
