REVELEY CLASSROOM BUILDING in Moscow, Idaho by Patano Studio Architecture

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

Article source: Patano Studio Architecture

Initial site visits at the University of Idaho Pitkin Nursery revealed hoop houses, metal sheds and stacks of planter boxes. Beginning with the idea of a wood box floating on the undulating sea of the Palouse, the design team set out to stitch together the program, landscape and the materiality of Idaho forest products. The college wanted to extend their public outreach in addition to nursery research functions. The outstretched ramps and decks reach out to the landscape and invite the public and students to the building. The Sales Office was pulled through the wood screen as a way to express itself beyond the functions of classroom, offices, and social gathering. The weathering cedar wood screen that stands off the building was imagined as a modern western storefront. The repetition of stacked boxes was intriguing; we saw that as the piece that expressed the transition from working nursery to classroom. The cedar wood screen is the threshold element for faculty and students to step through the gap between the two elements; wood screen and black box.

Two couple friends entrusted us the design of their homes after we win a private a competition, restricted to four architecture teams, in 2009.
The idea was simple: build two homes on a site between two buildings who had been acquired in the district of Sants, in Barcelona, and that had been object of previous projects already outdated due to the economic crisis.

TORRE DEL BORGO in Villa d’Adda, Italy by Arch. Gianluca Gelmini

Saturday, May 16th, 2015

Article source: Arch. Gianluca Gelmini

Torre del Borgo is one of the most famous fortified buildings in the history of Bergamo. The powerful and accurate quality of the medieval walls, the integrity of the fortified structure, the central position in the village, give to this artifact the most complete sense of monument. The restoration project has dealt with different aspects that conditioned the conservation, the use and the valorisation of the building: the structural instability of the walls and floors, the lack of an adequate system of connection between  plans, the total absence of plant networks, degradation and precariousness of internal and external stone facings, lack of windows and adequate interior finishes, on floors and walls. The entire work has developed pursuing a dual purpose, first identifying solutions to the problems of degradation, second offering an architectonic and functional reinterpretation of the building. The project is designed to be made into two functional lots of action: with the completion of Lot 1, are now fully accessible the four halls of the central tower and the spaces of the new building C intended to services and distribution. Important intervention is certainly the inclusion of the new system of ramps and walkways, made entirely with an iron structure, which is articulated between the spaces of the central tower and the new building, connecting the various levels of the complex. Lot 2 will include the redevelopment of public space in Piazza del Borgo with the creation of a large area covered and protected to the road, in direct continuity with the new pavement of the square. With the completion of the restoration project, Torre del Borgo will be able to accommodate the Public Library of Villa d’Adda.

Lifeguard Nesselande in Rotterdam, Netherlands by UArchitects

Thursday, May 14th, 2015

Article source: UArchitects

“How does a building looks like which is not used for half a year during the winter? “
During the winter it is closed, but when the sun arrives the building transforms. The arrival of the spring is visible in the building: screens move up, doors slide open and the flags wave into the air. The building reacts on the summer sun.

Chemistry lab in Aachen, Germany by kister scheithauer gross architekten und stadtplaner GmbH (ksg)

Thursday, May 14th, 2015

Article source: kister scheithauer gross architekten und stadtplaner GmbH (ksg)

After a preceding VOF procedure in 2011, kister scheithauer gross (ksg) implemented the new ‘Chemiepraktikum’ building for RWTH Aachen. The client is ‘Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW’. The monolithic building functions as a cornerstone of the existing development and is thus decisively contributing to the formation of a ‘prestigious address’ of the Chemical Institute. Laboratory areas of about 1,500 m² have been provided on a gross floor area of 3,720 m². Since April 1, students at the Institutes of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry of RWTH Aachen can now carry out research and experiments at 160 state-of-the-art fume cupboards.

Villa Arkö in Arkösund, Sweden by Marge Arkitekter AB

Saturday, May 9th, 2015

Article source: Marge Arkitekter AB

Villa Arkö is a summer house situated on an island in the archipelago of Norrköping that will also have the possibility to house the family over Christmas and fall vacations. A steep slant towards south east with a marvelous view is the benchmark for the placement and the form of the villa. The house contains of an archetypical basic shape with a high-pitched roof completely covered in cedar wood which over time will get a silver grey color and interact with the surrounding cliff landscape.  A glassed lower volume with sedum roofing and terraces is added on and is thereby creating a building which is following the decrease of the slant.  The in-between spaces of the volumes creates out-door spaces in different cardinal directions, on different levels, with and without roofs. Sliding sun shields (with inbuilt mosquito net for the bed rooms) can cover in and protect the house from weather and wind.

New’R, ZAC EuroNantes Gare in Nantes, France by Hamonic+Masson & Associés architects

Sunday, May 3rd, 2015

Article source: Hamonic+Masson & Associés architects

This emblematic project in the EuroNantes quarter introduces a gradation in the way people live in the air. The lower floors come in varying kinds of outside spaces with plant bins built into the railings. The higher floors, above any obstructed views, have terraces that become big panoramic screens with winter gardens protected from winds and bad weather. The script is honed and simple. The building reflects an image of great sobriety. Encased in light-coloured metal sidings, the façades catch the light in a constantly changing play of reflected light. Work on the skyline introduces variations in forms and varying ownership of the roofs. This enables different scales of views to people looking at the building from a distance and a diversity of places for the building’s users. The design plays on the idea of movement, backgrounds and multiplicity. Architecture in cinema scope.
