Le Serpentin Refurbishment in Pantin, France by Agence RVA

Sunday, October 11th, 2015

Article source: Agence RVA

From urban downfall to urban renewal

At the turn of the twentieth century, the Courtillières neighbourhood was in decline and suffered from a degraded image: the isolated community had become subject to overpopulated housing units, a deteriorated housing stock, an increasingly impoverished population, rising unemployment rates, tension and violence in public spaces and schools, and dangerously high rates of illegal activity.

In response to this alarming situation, the French state and local government authorities chose to implement public funds through the National Urban Renewal Agency (ANRU previously known as the “Grand Projet de Ville”) in an effort to remediate the existing conditions for the welfare of the community and its residents. To facilitate the process, the cities, Pantin and Bobigny (the two cities within which the Serpentin project site is situated), created a public interest group (GIP) through which a public tender was launched calling for urban renewal proposals from teams regrouping expertise in the fields of urban planning and design, architecture, landscape architecture, engineering and sociology.

Friday, October 9th, 2015

Article source: 2by4-architects

In the small town of Rijssen 2by4-architects designed the new healthcare and housing complex ‘Eltheto’ for elderly people. Until recently elderly people were seen as a group that functions outside of modern society and are only in need of care. The contemporary healthcare centers and housing for elderly people are still designed according to his idea. Over the past decennia this resulted in a range of introvert buildings where the main focus is healthcare instead of the quality of life itself.

PROTOTYPE CENTER OF ALTERNATIVE ALPINE TOURISM in Metsovo, Greece by FParchitect

Tuesday, September 8th, 2015

Article source: FParchitect

The Prototype Center of Alternative Alpine Tourism, located in Lake Springs Aoou Metsovo, is designed to give a boost and a new market in tourism, both as regards quality of services provided, and the variety of options. It is a center that can meet and reconcile the needs for recreation and relaxation (hotel unit – bungalow, restaurant, pool building) with the sport (sports center, boats port) and culture (convention center). These uses and the way their organization, make the band a unit that can operate autonomously, as is 20 km from the town of Metsovo. The composition blends with the natural environment, which is particularly beautiful, and topography, not by challenging existing habitats (forest, lake). For this reason, are been used principles and technologies of energy and bioclimatic design such as green roofs, the use of photovoltaic (main roof, blinds) and geothermal energy. Finally, the extensive use of materials such as wood, stone and glass contribute to reconciliation between the Centre and its environment.

Dachas in Bariloche, Argentina by ALRICGALINDEZ ARQUITECTOS

Saturday, August 8th, 2015

Article source: ALRICGALINDEZ ARQUITECTOS

Dachas is a housing complex located in Bariloche in a sloped site facing the Nahuel Huapi lake. The word Dachas comes from Russian, meaning country home, log cabin, small rest area in a rural setting. The site is limited in its upper and lower sides by streets hidden in a dense woodland area, a peculiar urban situation, in which the building plays a key role in opening the area and introducing the landscape into the site.
