Courtyard House in Toh Yi Rd, Singapore by Ming Architects

Tuesday, February 28th, 2017

Article source: Ming Architects

Flanked between the koi pond and the swimming pool, the double volume courtyard – a fulcrum to the house, was introduced to break the monotony of spaces in this linear house. Horizontal and vertical movements are endless and ample daylight floods the key living spaces. A 3-storey high feature steel staircase floats above the koi pond, with a vertical feature wall of black river pebbles as its backdrop. A slim bridge suspends over the courtyard and ties the front and rear wings of the house.

Courtyard by the West Sea in Beijing, China by META-PROJECT

Tuesday, February 7th, 2017

Article source: META-PROJECT

Unlike the introverted quality of the traditional courtyard house, the owner of this site asked for a variety of mix-use program, including tea house, dinning, party space, office, meeting, as well as dwelling and entertainment. Thecontemporary and sometime “public” program opened up the courtyard to become “extraverted”, so as to induce more human interactions. These required us to break the general understanding of the courtyard as an enclosed typology by introducing the experience of “meandering in the hutongs” into the courtyard, and the interventional approach was derived from the unfolding spatial narrative of hutong life.

Two courtyards in Los Angeles, California by MUÑOZ ARQUITECTOS ASOCIADOS S. C. P.

Saturday, January 14th, 2017

Article source: MUÑOZ ARQUITECTOS ASOCIADOS S. C. P.

We received a commission from a married couple to design a house to be built on a small plot (with an 8-meter frontage and a depth of 30 meters) inserted within a dense and difficult context. The couple, whose children had already left home, asked us for a simple house, obstruction-free and with a strongly contemporary feel.

Les Closiaux in Clamart, France by Dominique Coulon & associés

Thursday, January 12th, 2017

Article source: Dominique Coulon & associés

The building is located in a 1950s residential area in the Paris suburbs. The large sports hall is positioned at the far end of the site, giving the street a degree of amplitude and generating a public space which reinforces the building’s status as a community facility. The volume of the accommodation is in keeping with the houses in the neighbourhood. The fragmentation of the programmes produces a displacement between the two volumes, offering glimpses of the central part of the site and opening up views towards the gardens.

Wednesday, November 16th, 2016

Article source: v2com

The logistic office and warehouse were set among the mountains of Ruifang, on the outskirts of New Taipei City. The reconfigured space introduces a new approach to logistic offices as opposed to the stereotypical warehouse workplace. The design embodies a casual, warm and playful environment that reflects the belief in each individual’s ability to show initiative.

The South Yard in Nanning, China by Advanced Architecture Lab + Atelier UPA

Tuesday, November 8th, 2016

Article source: Advanced Architecture Lab

The South Yard, namely a southern courtyard, is located in Sanjia, Yangshan Village, Guling Town, Mashan County, Nanning, Guangxi Province. Through ages, this tranquil and plain village has been settled by three clans: Huang, Liang and Tang, thus named Sanjia (Three Surnames). The unparalleled Karst Landform surrounds the village, forming a greenary barrier naturally. In the bottom of mountains, a brooklet flows slowly through the village, with children swimming and housewives washing vagetables and clothes beside it. The melodious sound of three-part folk music comes from far away, attractive and pleasant to the ear.
