A Circle in a Square in Niigata prefecture, Japan by Binocle

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

Article source: Binocle

Novalis noted that “The curve is the triumph of the freedom on the rule”, Giovanni Lindo Ferretti used to sing that “Straightness is for hastiness” and Oscar Niemeyer kept on explaining: “It is not the right angle that attracts me. Nor the straight line, tough, inflexible, created by man. What attracts me is the free, sensual curve. The curve I find in the mountains of my country, in the sinuous course of its rivers, in the waves of the sea, in the clouds of the sky, in the body of the favorite woman. Of curves is made all the universe.”

Daeyang Gallery and House in Seoul, Korea by Steven Holl Architects

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Article source: Steven Holl Architects

The private gallery and house is sited in the hills of the Kangbuk section of Seoul, Korea. The project was designed as an experiment parallel to a research studio on “the architectonics of music”. The basic geometry of the building is inspired by a 1967 sketch for a music score by the composer Istvan Anhalt, “Symphony of Modules,” which was discovered in a book by John Cage titled “Notations.”
Three pavilions; one for entry, one residence, and one event space, appear to push upward from a continuous gallery level below. A sheet of water establishes the plane of reference from above and below.

Inside Fashion Store in Vienna, Austria by Söhne & Partner Architects

Sunday, July 8th, 2012

Article source: Söhne & Partner Architects

A 100m² shop presents fashion in a discreet but appealing way.

It was the designer’s intention to create a restrained and straight room in order to make it an eye-catcher for the Neubaugasse in Vienna. Thus, people who are passing by should be guided into the store. The colour turquoise directs the customers through the shop while the interior is mainly white and sober in order to present the fashion at the best. Big mirror surfaces make the room seemingly bigger.

Article source: Mauricio Silva Arquitectos

From the evolution that squares have experienced, there is a new way to use and exploit its inside: the galleries. The main function of these is to link the exterior and interior of the block from the gallery as a space for mediation and where public space is mixed with the commercial one. In Valdivia, a city where it rains most of the time, this type of space is an opportunity to experience the city throughout the year and revitalize the public space and local business.
