PES-Architects’ winning proposal aims to offer an extraordinary experience for ordinary users by creating a new type of “cultural shopping mall”. Light Arrival in Crystal Lake, Illinois by FLYNN ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

Thursday, November 8th, 2018

Article source: FLYNN ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

A luminous ceiling basks a sunroom in waves of light

Having grown tired of Chicago’s humid summers and cold winters limiting their use of an existing screened porch, the clients requested an enclosed sunroom, uplifting and full of light, to be enjoyed year round. The architect, Matt Flynn, wanted a fluid presence to soften the rectangular space. The result: a curvilinear, translucent, backlit, full-room suspended ceiling that bathes the sunroom in relaxing, diffuse light.

Haus B in Dreieich, Germany by one fine day Architekten

Friday, October 12th, 2018

Article source: one fine day Architekten

Settlements
Haus B is located in in the town of Dreieich, within the vicinity of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Here the house is embedded in a quite typical suburban housing settlement that had been developed during the 1960s. Today, this settlement depicts both: the aesthetics of an increasingly wealthy, yet rather conservative and homogeneous suburban society during the so-called “Wirtschaftswunder” of post-war Germany; and a heavily plural and individualist approach towards the aesthetics of one’s own house that manifests itself in a rather eclectic collage of styles since the 1990s.

The former local societal, cultural and aesthetic conventions of the1960s reflect themselves in a rather homogeneous array of small-scale bungalows and houses with allegedly local stylistic elements, such as gabled or hipped roofs and a rather rustic-style use of materials. On the other side a much more differentiated and somewhat reckless approach to size and individualized aesthetics has filled empty plots but also replaced existing houses since the 1990s. Thus, Haus B finds itself in an apparently homogeneous, yet at least architecturally also quite ambiguous neighbourhood. Here it has to balance the needs of contemporary living and aesthetics with the cultural and formal implications of a grown context that is typical for many suburban settlements throughout the region.

Mount Herzl Memorial in Jerusalem, Israel by Kimmel Eshkolot Architects

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018

Article source: Kimmel Eshkolot Architects

The Mount Herzl Memorial Hall is a unique place of commemoration. It’s raison d’etre is to be a memorial for all the fallen soldiers of the country, and thus contains all their names.

It is a project of hope for peaceful times.

Set in a calm biblical scenery, but adjacent to the nowadays busy streets of Jerusalem, the space is isolated and quiet. It was excavated in the mountain to form an intimate space for both personal and collective experiences of commemoration. Above the hall, the mountain is reconstructed of curved topographies made of Jerusalem stone. An undulating funnel-shaped formation of bricks opens the excavated hall to the sky. Its irregular vortex shape floods the space with ever- changing natural light.

[Gol]Khaneh in Alborz, Iran by SHABOFFICE

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

Article source: SHABOFFICE

[GOL]KHANEH is located on the outskirts of the city of Karaj, about 60km west of Tehran. It is designed and built as a vacation home for a family of 6.

Two adjacent but separate plots – each about 5000 square meters – form the site for this project. One of the plots was thick with old fruit trees while the other, adjacent to a noisy street with a chaotic line of low-rise residential buildings, was dry and barely had any trees because of a previous fire. Therefore, the plot with few trees and vegetation was chosen as the building site and creating a buffer to maximize privacy and limit views and noise transfer from the neighbouring street to the site quickly became a priority in design.
