May/September : Eskenazi Hospital Parking Structure Art Facade in Indianapolis, IN by Urbana Studio

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

Article source: Urbana Studio

This project began with an interest in challenging the typical notion of the parking structure as an unappreciated infrastructural typology by transforming the new Eskenazi Hospital parking structure into a binary, synthetic terrain. The effect of a field of 7,000 angled metal panels in conjunction with an articulated east/west color strategy creates a dynamic façade system that offers observers a unique visual experience depending on their vantage point and the pace at which they are moving through the site.

TEACHING PAVILION AT ARRIXACA HOSPITAL in MURCIA, SPAIN by SANCHO-MADRIDEJOS ARCHITECTURE OFFICE

Friday, May 30th, 2014

Article source: SANCHO-MADRIDEJOS ARCHITECTURE OFFICE

The medicine Faculty completes the facilities on the Arrixaca Hospital grounds. The nature of the site and the brief give it a degree of independence from the rest of the precinct in both its use and character, eschewing the peculiar hospital image.

The project is understood as a neutral, compact, petrous box with four and two heights. Inwardly ‘projected void’ are used to tense the box and generate spaces in diverse scales and qualities. The vestibule space thus arises from the confrontation between two voids of a different nature, one measuring 15 x 15 x 15 m (interior) and the other 9 x 9 x 6 m (exterior) which compress and tense it vertically. The transition between the successive episodes: void (entrance space), vertical vestibule space and void (central patio), each one with its own properties, sets the main time and spatial theme of the project.

Subacute Hospital of Mollet in Barcelona, Spain by Mario Corea Arquitectura

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014

Article source: Mario Corea Arquitectura

The recently inaugurated Subacute Hospital in Mollet del Vallès is an example of how a hospital constructed in the 1950s and 60s, which had fallen into disuse, can be successfully recycled to meet the current and future challenges emerging in healthcare. The renovation project was based on simple and effective interventions that were practical as well as functional, resulting in a low-cost, energy-efficient hospital that re-assumes an active role in the day-to-day life of the city.

Urban strategy

The new ETH building is conceived as an efficient and flexible architectural device, providing an answer to the multiple aspects shaping its complex environment.

On the one hand, the landscape and the urban quality of the public spaces around the building condition the building’s insertion.  The respect of the historical urban fabric, in particular the Heritage garden in the south facade of the site, is essential as it constitutes an important area of the city urban fabric throughout the centuries. At the same time, all the classed trees in the site will be preserved.
