MA House in Morelos, México by Cadaval & Sola-Morales

Friday, February 24th, 2017

Article source: Cadaval & Sola-Morales

The commission of the house comes together with the explicit petition to use stone as the main construction material. The decision doesn’t respond necessarily to esthetic reasons but more likely to its common existence in the place, its little need for maintenance and its low cost for built square meter. Such premises are taken as a project challenge both in a structural, typological and esthetic way.

Memory House in Lima, Perú by Chetecortes Architects

Friday, February 24th, 2017

Article source: Chetecortes Architects

When I say Beach, we can quickly see the blue of the sea under a clear sky, next to the warm sand, bathed in an intense yellow light that illuminates the day. The relaxing sound of the waves begins to whisper our ears, while our body begins to perceive a refreshing temperature, the wind passing.

We create the house, understanding first the reaction of the people to the previous text.

Hill Top Cottage in NSW, Australia by Luigi Rosselli Architects

Thursday, February 23rd, 2017

Article source: Luigi Rosselli Architects

Weaving architectural heritage with contemporary design and lifestyle is a practice that rewards with surprises and characterful places.

In a conservative residential pocket close to North Sydney, a workers cottage perches on top of a hill looking south-east towards striking views of Sydney Harbour.  The idea behind the design was to retain the existing character of the cottage to the front – its low slung and strong horizontal lines – and place a more contemporary two storey addition at the back behind the ridge.  The new upper level is fully clad with CNC routed plywood shutters, it pierces the ample roof plane to the front of the house with a wide dormer window that is curved at the corners.

The “Craftsman’s” cottage style of the first decades of the 20th century was characterised by a simple gable roof with low eaves that ran parallel to the street with a horizontal elevation, the complete opposite to the California Bungalow style, with its gables facing the front boundary. The first floor attic dormer and garage have been designed with stretched and horizontal proportions. The existing ground floor windows have new sliding plywood shutters. The sandstone walls have adopted the same type of coursing and jointing as the existing stone footings of the house, Image Courtesy © Justin Alexander

“Tea House in Li Garden” in Shanghai, China by Atelier Deshaus

Thursday, February 23rd, 2017

Article source: Atelier Deshaus

The Tea House is located in an approximately 110 m2 little garden, where a tall paulownia stands and covers our little building under its huge crown. Before that, this small place could not be seriously called garden, for it was something residue left by two staircases connecting to the neighboring office. Therefore, how to make the Tea House occupy this space at a minimum level so as to form a garden, becomes a key point in the design process.

House Justice in NSW, Australia by buck&simple

Thursday, February 23rd, 2017

Article source: buck&simple

House Justice involves alterations and additions to a two storey, semi-detached, Edwardian Queen Anne/Arts and Crafts style house listed on the state heritage inventory. The project begun with our client requesting that we add a carport and an awning reacquainting the rear yard with their home.

Their decision to downsize and remain local to the civic and social places they love, thankfully, had positive repercussions on the design process.

The Quest in Swanage, England by Ström Architects

Thursday, February 23rd, 2017

Article source: Ström Architects

“The Quest” is a private house in Swanage (UK); it is a new-build home replacing an ageing bungalow that had been on the site since 1917.

The clients wanted a house for their retirement, but with a keen interest in design and a love of abstract and modern art, it needed to eschew the usual trappings of staid, retirement home design.
