Loft renovation in Oslo, Norway by Austigard Arkitektur AS

Saturday, April 9th, 2016

Article source: Austigard Arkitektur AS

The architect was approached by the client with the request of converting the existing loft from uninsulated storage to living spaces. Due to the low ceiling height at about 2.1 at the maximum, the client suggested the roof be completely rebuilt in a position about one meter higher. This original plan would have doubled the building budget and most probably have been rejected by building authorities due to height restrictions. Instead the architect suggested keeping the roof in the same position, and instead work with the space so that it would be usable and feel spacious, even with the limited ceiling height.

House on a cliff in Oslo, Norway by Austigard Arkitektur AS

Friday, April 8th, 2016

Article source: Austigard Arkitektur AS

The client asked the architect for a one-room extension, which is what the zoning laws would permit. Since The house had only a small garden in front, facing morning sun, so the architect proposed to put the extension largely below ground, and allow for a big rooftop terrace facing evening sun and sunset. This would also allow for a more secluded location of the extended room, which was a wish by the client.

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016

Article source: Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter

The Romsdal Folk Museum is an architectonic attraction and a treasured landmark that embodies the history and identity of the entire region. Our intention in this project was to let the structure signal its meaning and function through an architectural expression and the use of local materials. The scale of the building refers to the urbanity and morphology of the town. The overall layout of the museum grounds the connections to the town by linking different surrounding areas in an overall plan where all circulation is linked in a unified structure. The project conveys an open and progressive attitude that makes diverse utilization possible.

Since more than 130 years, ‘Hooghuys’ is part of the the site Lorette Convent, composed of different wings surrounded by the Drabstraat, the Begijnenstraat and the Graspoort. Article source: Taylor & Company

For this suburban home, Dan Brunn, AIA, principal of Dan Brunn Architecture, injected the feeling of openness and of continuum, which was of utmost importance to the clients. As a means to negate the claustrophobic spaces of their primary residence, the architect developed a language to express the free flowing nature of the design.

Palo Alto Eichler Remodel in CA by Klopf Architecture

Thursday, February 11th, 2016

Article source: Klopf Architecture

Klopf Architecture updated a classic Eichler indoor-outdoor home to better suit the needs of a very busy family. The owners have two rather young kids and are also professionals with unpredictable, busy schedules. The house also had to accommodate the needs of two live-in nannies who cover for the parents when they’re indisposed. With those considerations in mind, the owners selected this house because it was larger than typical Eichlers because past additions had been already been made to the house. However, at the time of purchase the house was in poor condition and needed a complete gut remodel including all new roof, mechanical systems, and electrical, the replacement of dry-rotted siding and framing, some layout changes, and all new finishes. The house is super-insulated and has no need of air-conditioning.
