Window on the Lake in Quebec, Canada by yiacouvakis hamelin, architectes

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018

Article source: v2com

A window on the lake: the very essence of the cottage. A warm, simple wood dwelling open to nature and a peaceful lake.

The house stands on the site of an old family cottage, just steps away from the shores of Lac Plaisant in the Mauricie region. Thanks to its simplicity, restraint and refinement, the project embodies the architect’s attempt to capture the essence of cottage life – a wooden home designed for vacations and enabling true communion with nature.

Home in High Latitude, China by hypersity office

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018

Article source: hypersity office

The project is nominated to the nonprofit program “Dream of Decoration”, which is located at 5th Liaoyang Street in Harbin, the heart of the entire city. As a small bungalow at the entrance of the courtyard, the renovated bungalow is located in a large Russian style compound, which is composed of national protected buildings of eclecticism. The bungalow was originally a room for security-guard with a floor area of 28.77 square meters only. For some historical reasons, it was changed to ordinary residence, with property rights, and being continuously expanded exteriorly for a family of three. The biggest challenge of the entire project is to resolve the current problem to satisfy the family’s needs, while still maintains a dialogue with surrounding historic neighborhood. It is neither a simple way to replicate traditional Russian style eclectic architecture, nor to escape the environmental constraints, and it is to be sure to strike a balance between the two.

Superlofts in Amsterdam, Netherlands by MARC KOEHLER ARCHITECTS

Tuesday, April 17th, 2018

Article source: v2com

Tapping into the open building movement, Superlofts offers its residents the freedom to design and/or self-build their homes from scratch incorporating any hybrid function, and co-create the shared spaces as a community.

Resilient buildings can adapt and evolve to a city’s ever-changing programmes and the lifestyles of its inhabitants. Unfortunately as older building stock becomes obsolete this results in wasted empty or under-utilised space. In the Netherlands, the estimated total building vacancy is five times the number of new buildings constructed annually.

Home Sweet Candy Home in Terranuova Bracciolini, Italy by Rachele Biancalani Studio

Tuesday, April 17th, 2018

Article source: Rachele Biancalani Studio

This apartment on two levels appeared little suited to the needs of our client, a young emerging writer who lives alone and loves having friends. The living area had infact very limited size: in a few square meters were condensed kitchen, dining room and living room. Instead, there were three large bedrooms unnecessary for our customer. Also finishes, rustic, Tuscan (cooked to the floor, sponged yellow walls, the stone staircase with iron handrail) did not meet the tastes of the young customer that loved contemporary style. Although the budget was not very high, we managed to optimize it by investing in the fundamental changes that could transform the space: we demolished the kitchen’s wall and we used one of the bedrooms to create a large kitchen and a dining room and better organize the big living area. A resin floor has successfully covered the old terracotta tiles and part of the stair. Master bedroom and guest room are both characterized by pink color as the rest of the apartment. White, pink (in all nuances) and chocolate brown reflect the personality and sweetness of Serena!

Joya Villas in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica by Studio Saxe

Tuesday, April 17th, 2018

Article source: Studio Saxe

Set in the rainforest of Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, two modern homes project out of the landscape and are defined by a series of steel frames that that bring the best modern methods of construction to a tropical location. The use of large steel I-beams and concrete is a tenet of the international language of Modernist architecture and Studio Saxe have taken this design approach and recontextualised it for contemporary use. This project is a continuation of their search for an authentic Central American tropical architecture.

DASA House in Daegu, South Korea by ‘Snow AIDe

Monday, April 16th, 2018

Article source: ‘Snow AIDe

A small town near Nakdong River is a place where the client spent his youth. He wanted to come back to his hometown and spend rest of his life in his new house. The site was the deepest place in town and a good place to overlook the town. There was a limitation of using site due to the planned future road on the back of bamboo woods. To maximize green space, we placed the house following the shape of the boundary on the town side. The overall form of the house is ascending from the entrance to the upper floor like a ridge.

Broadview Loft in Toronto, Canada by Studio AC

Monday, April 16th, 2018

Article source: Studio AC

Located in a downtown loft in Toronto, Canada we were asked to design a studio loft space for a young professional that wanted something equally fun, functional and unique. We produced a scheme that revolves around an element we call the ‘bed box’ which features a generous arch entryway and elevation change – a move that produces a signifier for the sleeping quarters and a moment of warmth in opposition to the white and concrete finishes of the rest of the loft. This warmth is achieved through a floor and wall wrapper of finish plywood that holds your feet and eye as you walk in. Initial studies saw this element take on a variety of forms, orientations and materials but the simple arch configuration was a reaction to the clients background, travels and personality. This fed nicely into the form of the curtain track which is the same arch shape in plan as the other is in elevation. This subtle cuing ties the two elements together, one hard and stationary, the other light and dynamic.
