The ring out of this valley is not changed, it’s the same silent which someone heard long ago, long before your passing.
Nothing ever happens here. But if you have patience when you stopping, you can understand how the atmosphere you breathe in this place is ancient, it’s chimes in ethereal way. It’s the architecture who is talking about this.
You can see, towards valley, the bell tower and the historic tower and between them the castle walls. The space between them has something pleasantly melancholy.

It was difficult and diligent work, but as a result we’ve got incredibly charming and soulful house. The original building has neither roof nor finishing, also a part of foundation was absent. We had to work very hard over the architecture of the building and the landscape. The result is a two-storey house of 240 sq m with three bedrooms, dining and living area, a kitchen, a lounge on the first floor, two bathrooms, laundry room and the furnace. The customer wanted to divide a whole space into several functional areas. The lion’s share of the first floor was taken by the living room, where we also organized a dining area. The ceiling height was really a problem, but at the same time, it was the starting point for the entire home concept. We decided to set the rhythm with wooden beams on the ceiling, which helped not only visually stretch the space, but also create the necessary comfort. A fireplace became a beautiful decoration of the living room. We used marble to cover the fireplace. Dining area is located near the window. We intentionally abandoned a textile to open a panoramic courtyard view. Laconic and functional kitchen is separated by a system of sliding panels that reflecting a light. Also there is a comfortable zone for breakfast, which has become a favorite place of the customer. A slate tiles is practical and aesthetic solution for the walls in the kitchen and hallway. We put down the sills to let a light in, what has visually raised the ceiling. On the first and second floor we have made spacious halls with a gallery on the first and work place on the second one.

Nowadays, more and more people in metropolis prefer living solitary rather than with their families. The concept of “home” is gradually becoming independent from the concept of “family” and becoming more related with public space. In consequence, commercial space will gradually become the other home of urban citizens. Trying to become a breakthrough of traditional retail space arrangement, this design combines the function of beauty, leisure and communication to meet the need of above-‐mentioned modern lifestyle.

Renovation of tenements in Nanluoguxiang. The small house is the home of three generations, five people. We don’t want the intimate feeling in this family disappear, and to create individual space for every member at the same time. Therefore, the basic concept is to provide each person a relative private living space, but to keep the opportunity of interpersonal communicating in details.

The commission began in a private competition, in which our office was selected not by a particular project, but by the attitude showed to the clients to build a maximum house with a very small budget in a plot with a very sharp slope. And not least, the involvement and commitment, perhaps beyond any logical reason, to propose successive approximations to the project (up to five preliminary projects and a full executive project with its visa) before the final solution.

This house was a chance to be our own clients. It was purchased with the intention of completely renovating, extending and adapting it to the scenarios of our own family life. It presented us with the opportunity to ‘practice what we preach’ to its fullest expression and create the scenario house. The main design challenge was finding a way of connecting the front part of the house, which originally had two separate Victorian reception rooms with the basement level, a full floor height below, both physically and visually, in order to create a sense of single and connected open living and kitchen spaces.

The site
The land is situated close to a small village in the East Cantons. It runs at a steep gradient into a small valley enclosed by a wooded slope in the distance. The view is spectacular, showcasing a rural landscape. The visual and ecological quality of the site must be preserved and developed as far as possible.
