Edge House by Mobius Architects

Thursday, March 19th, 2015

Article source: Mobius Architects

The house owes its narration to a local anomaly – a slope plot with a view on the mountains surrounding Cracow is knifed through by an 8-meter lime rock.

The rock edge divides the plot into two levels, the lower one providing full privacy to the house owners, while the upper one – offering a panoramic view, as well as neighboring other buildings. It is an expression of the seemingly impossible – to build a house on the edge and to connect to plot parts to be able to use its potential to the fullest.

The House in Cassà, Spain by Ricard Galiana Nadal . arquitecte

Thursday, March 19th, 2015

Article source: Ricard Galiana Nadal . arquitecte

“The House in Cassà project is a detached single-family house built in a new neighborhood in Cassà de la Selva (Girona). The house is situated in a plot with a small slope facing the south which is divided in two different levels. The upper level hosts the main rooms and swimming pool whereas the lower level accommodates the garden and the parking. The main rooms are distributed along a single floor divided in two concrete blocks –“night and day areas”– , with a double-height living room and a mezzanine creating a transparent space connecting both blocks. The two blocks offer the needed degree of privacy to each space while taking into consideration the private views, the street, the forest and the solar orientation. The northern backyard provides a pedestrian access in contact with the forest. The south porch-terrace faces the swimming pool.”

Z HOUSE IN MANTOVA, Italy by Vittorio Longheu Architect

Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

Article source: Vittorio Longheu Architect

The project is located in the historical centre of Mantua, in a part of the city that has been formed  and consolidated during 16th century, also called the addition of Giulio Romano.

The design process begins with some reflections on the relationship between the existing buildings, on the demolition of incongruous parts of them and on the  relationships with volumes in expansion.

Straw bale house by Brian Balfern Waite

Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

Article source: Brian Balfern Waite

A strawbale insulated, easily erected self-build home that is available as a kit.
It is a simple structure intended to exploit the cost savings of mass production yet flexible enough to cater for many situations.
The design of the structure has been reduced to basically one curved lightweight rib beam which are paired together to form a cruck ‘A’ frame. This cruck is then repeated every meter (bale length) for whatever length of building is required. So the length is infinite, the interior floor width is 5 to 7 meter on two levels, the height is also variable.
Every bale is supported to eliminate settlement and every bale is covered by the roofing which, together with a passive drought system, enables the building to cope with exposed locations.
The vaulted interior is totally free of structural restrictions and so can be divided, or not, to the owners needs.
