MORRIS HOUSE in Los Angeles, California by Martin Fenlon Architecture

Friday, July 10th, 2015

Article source: Martin Fenlon Architecture

This project is the articulation of an ideal put into action. A polished steel circle, gently overs over the public plaza. The size of the circle exceeds the given area of the plaza, so one end lifts up so that the rest of the circle can comfortably situate itself into the given area. In doing this, two very different conditions are negotiated and resolved, both in a literal and figurative sense.

The polished steel top surface of the circle reflects its surroundings, bringing the sky above down to the ground below.

Vega Cottage in Norway by Kolman Boye Architects

Friday, July 10th, 2015

Article source: Kolman Boye Architects

The house stands on the island of Vega in the Norwegian archipelago not far from the polar circle. The site is distinctive for its grand and harsh northern landscape with wide panoramas of the Norwegian Sea and the jagged mountains rising from it. Seemingly growing from the landscape, the house sits on a rock beneath a granite shoulder negotiating the uneven terrain. As not to disturb the dominant view towards the sea, access to the house is given through a narrow natural ravine densely grown with gnarled birch shrubs and laid out with sea-sand from the nearby shore. The surrounding landscape remains untouched and wild. The large windows of the house face three directions, each with its strong unique characteristic. They are simple and robust in detailing and the optically white glass conveys undisturbed frames of the ocean, the mountain range and the bedrock. Organised on two levels adapting to the terrain, the plan is compact, providing generous social spaces within a limited floor area. The upper level is comprised of smaller scale bedrooms and family rooms, whereas the lower level is a large gallery-like space structured around a stone hearth. Completed in linseed oil painted pine with untreated birch skirting, frames and reveals – the interior is kept subtle with a character of being hand-built – promoting tactile qualities and the attractive patina developed over time.

HOUSE B in Munich, Germany by FORMAT ELF ARCHITEKTEN

Thursday, July 9th, 2015

Article source: FORMAT ELF ARCHITEKTEN

Located in the urban outskirts of Munich, the detached single-family house B built in timber frame construction was completed after only six months of construction. On the small plot the maximal possible cubature and the existing parameters have been used in an optimal way. The building follows line of the houses in the street and thus continues the urban edge along the link road. The front garden area next to the street is thereby supported and the roof orientation of the surrounding buildings continued.

Solar House in Canada by Nacho Gias

Thursday, July 9th, 2015

Article source: Nacho Gias

Insight:

The project main idea lay on the sun interaction with a domo located in New Scotland, Canada.
The first step was to find out how the building reacts to sun light in different day key moments all along the year. The use of a 3d software allows me to figure out which areas would be exposed to sun light and which ones would be into shadow. At that point, I found an area that would be always exposed to light.

Joly House in Bangkok, Thailand by Stu/D/O Architects

Wednesday, July 8th, 2015

Article source: Stu/D/O Architects

This three-story house for a family of four has a footprint of 250 square meters and a height of 11 meters. It is located on the street corner in one of the most exquisite and densely populated residential areas of Bangkok. Flanked by rows of shophouses, main living spaces are elevated to the second floor to improve the visual conditions and allow rooms for service spaces on ground. Upon arrival, one is greeted with the skylights, through which shown the rippling strips of caustic patterns resulting from the interplay between lights and water of the swimming pool above. The changing time of the day contributes to the changing color of lights, making this parking space- the arrival space, more dynamic.

The concept of this designing is to ensure the privacy and safety, and also create a living space which makes family members happy and easy.

At night, the shadow of houses will change with the light of the moon and stars, just like expressions on people’s face.

Insertion of the project on the site. The implantation was designed as gentle as possible, in order to preserve the level difference of the site and the views. We created two side stone walls, like a programmatic box with the social and service areas of the house.

McIlwrick Street Residences in Windsor Victoria, Australia by B.E ARCHITECTURE

Tuesday, July 7th, 2015

Article source: B.E ARCHITECTURE

The McIlwrick Street Residences are a three-townhouse development located on a single residential block in Windsor. Like an old European village, the development is a small cluster of buildings you can see through and walk between such that the significant addition feels as though it could have always been there.
