307 SHOTWELL STREET in San Francisco, California by Todd Davis Architecture

Saturday, November 15th, 2014

Article source: Todd Davis Architecture

1. The property was not in great shape when the client purchased it: foreclosed in 2011, it endured much vandalism and a habitual squatter. The front of the property was very industrial in appearance, with a tall wooden fence built around the board-formed concrete garage. The combined structure was topped with a large metal electrical pylon (see attached photo). All street-facing surfaces had been painted a putty grey color.

O House in Bucharest, Romania by SYAA

Friday, November 14th, 2014

Article source: SYAA

The particularity of this project is the very small (116sqm), plot and the desire of two friends to build together their urban apartments, each of them with its own appendix functioning as a professional space – a wine bar and a recording studio respectively. These special additions, along with the reduced imprint of the house, dictated a vertical spatial layout: the wine bar and duplex belonging to one of the clients were placed on the underground, ground floor and first floor, thus also enjoying the presence of a small courtyard, whereas the recording studio and the other duplex were placed on the terraced attic, the second and the third floors. The result was a five-level building with four functional units. The height – unusual for a house – as well as the owners’ lifestyle and requests led to the design of four different access ways and a semi-open exterior staircase, integrated in the building’s envelope. The wine bar, located on the underground level and open to the public, communicates directly with the street through a buffer space on the ground floor.

S-house in Saitama, Japan by YuusukeKarasawa Architects

Friday, November 14th, 2014

Article source: YuusukeKarasawa Architects

The project is a small house built in a residential area near Omiya station in Saitama. Two 50m2 floors are cross over in two levels on a site that measures around 100 m2. Each level is quartered, two opposing floors of which are elevated. The eaves surrounded at the middle of the ceiling height of the other two floors intertwine with the elevated floors, creating a space characterized by a complex network. The elevated floors of the two levels continue to a diagonal wall, as well as to the floors above. The floors branch out again to continue above, staggering against the exterior eaves to compose a uniquely intricate elevation. This complicated structural logic is applied not just in the elevation but throughout the interior space as well, where the floors themselves entwine diagonally, with a void that looks out to the opposing space created at the center of this complicated floor. Although this opposing space seen from the void appears to continue visually, one can only arrive at it by traveling through the complicated levels, and taking a drastic detour after moving to a different floor. While visually adjacent, the flow is one that requires a long traveling distance. The commonly understood three dimensional depth and the sense of distance are being disturbed, creating architectural spaces where various distances become complicated, much like what is happening in infospheres like the internet. This architecture realizes such network–type spaces, where various distances become increasingly complex, as a “network of complex levels” in which multiple levels are networked and layered over one another. Our hope is that this complex, layered network space will become a new architectural form that captures the various activities borne out of today’s informational society, where diversity and order are being demanded at the same time.

Paperwhite in Montreal, Canada by Jean Verville architecte

Friday, November 14th, 2014

Article Source: V2com

The residence, located in Greenfield Park, was designed for a young family settling to a suburb close to Montreal. The architect’s proposition is a sculptural composition that spreads in simple geometrical forms. The division of the volumes, the recess position of the main body just like its angle suggest a singular perspective and a dynamic volumetric that present a sensitive integration of contemporary architecture to a district dating from the 50s. Harmonizing in size, color and profiles with the sloping roof houses of the sector, the new construction is all covered by a white wood cladding.

Casa Hamar in Hedmark county, Norway by Gudmundur Jonsson Arkitektkontor

Friday, November 14th, 2014

Article source: Gudmundur Jonsson Arkitektkontor

The building is a 3-story house containing the basement as a two studio-apartments for hire. There is an excellent view towards south, a situation that has formed the two glazed volumes that are cantilevered and stretching towards the view. The top-floor is retracted a bit in order to give the overall impression of a lower building in the landscape and as well acting as an important creator of the composition. The longitudinal 2-storey-woid in the center of the house is emphasizing the connection between the two main spaces an simultaneously creating a spacious flow between stories.
