Vertical Village II in Gothenburg, Sweden by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter

Tuesday, February 4th, 2020

Article source: Tham & Videgård Arkitekter

The new homes in Wendelstrand are part of a new district planned for a site at the Landvetter lake, in Gothenburg, Sweden. Tham & Videgård’s contribution is a solid timber version of the Vertical village scheme T&V designed for a site in Stockholm in 2009. The idea is to propose an alternative to the row house typology, offering each unit a private garden with keeping of the same efficient density as standard row-houses. This is achieved with vertical massing rather than horizontal, where compact three level homes sit in rounded plots defined by high hedges of flowering bushes.

Unikato in Katowice, Poland by KWK Promes

Tuesday, February 4th, 2020

Article source: KWK Promes

Context

Unikato supposed to stand in the center of Katowice – once a dynamically developing industrial city. The testimony of that era are the impressive modernist buildings. Today, the city is experiencing a demographic crisis and suffers from sub-urbanization. There is a lack of new residential buildings, and the city is subordinated to car traffic generated by people coming here every day to work from the sprawling suburbs. Unikato is to be an impulse to reverse this negative trend and to breathe new life into the area.

Project Guidelines

The project budget was extremely low. The investor provided funds only for a cheap finish – styrofoam, plaster, white plastic windows – and for the balconies, which were to be a storage space for small apartments.

All the forms, details, materials and colors applied by architects are the chepaest and and very pragmatic solutions, Image Courtesy © Juliusz Sokolowski

Green House in São Paulo, Brazil by AMZ Arquitetos

Monday, February 3rd, 2020

Article source: AMZ Arquitetos

Commissioned by a young couple with three children, the house was built on one of the few remaining plots at a downtown neighborhood in São Paulo, and was conceived to conform to the original site in order to double as a country house on weekends and free time.

The idea was to design a house that wasn’t built over the garden, but rather under it. To that end, a reinforced concrete shell supports a thick layer of substrate able to sustain medium-sized trees. The house program is sheltered under this structure, split between service, living and sleeping blocks, while leisure space (barbecue area, play area and sauna) is located above it, taking advantage of the green neighborhood.

RC34 House in Santander, Spain by Zooco Estudio

Monday, February 3rd, 2020

Article source: Zooco Estudio

The Project is developed in an existing dwelling located in a residential area of el Sardinero, an exclusive neighbourhood with magnificent views of the Cantabric Sea.

The dwelling belongs to the attic level that seizes the whole plan extension of the building. In its origin, the house had an outdated plan distribution. The access hall had no natural light nor air and the access to the different rooms was handled by a long corridor.

Eclipse house in Sofia, Bulgaria by I/O architects

Monday, February 3rd, 2020

Article source: I/O architects

Utterly introvert, this house is located on the last plot of a desired neighbourhood in the outskirts of Sofia, Bulgaria. The complexity of the program confronts the size of the site thus determining the tree structure of the house. Each of the three stories differs in both size and concealment strategy. The vastest first story is underground yet naturally lit and directly connected to the street and the garden. The compressed and mostly open ground floor together with the small garden is hidden behind the hedge. The privacy and sunlight of the large upper floor are meticulously controlled by big scale sliding panels. Only the simple hovering pigmented zinc volume and the blind entrance are exposed to the street while the rest of the complex structure remains unrevealed. The spaces inside are integrated around the light of the central atrium and pierced by unexpected space connections. The reflective roof of the deep veranda brings back garden view to the interior. The linear underground space of the swimming pool has visual and physical contact with the garden while the bright garage is connected to the rest of the house through an under-stair periscope space.

Changsha Penthouse in Hunan, China by KEY OPERATION INC. / ARCHITECTS

Monday, February 3rd, 2020

Article source: KEY OPERATION INC. / ARCHITECTS

Chinese condominiums are sold in interior skeletons, so buyers are free to work with their own interior contractors.

In the center of the living room, a raised floor furniture is integrated with the sofa so that you can lie down and practice yoga. The floor level is changed to give the space a three-dimensional effect, and the eye level is lowered by sitting on the floor so that the ceiling can be felt higher. Both sides of a raised floor have low shelves, and the window side that was originally a balcony is a space where a mahjong table can be placed, and the dining side is a passage that leads to the bedroom.

AND Pastel in Istanbul, Turkey by Martha Schwartz Partners

Sunday, February 2nd, 2020

Article source: Martha Schwartz Partners

A new development in the expanding Kartal district on the Asian side of Istanbul will open up a proposed, master planned community of mixed uses. The district itself has a history of light industrial and manufacturing uses that are moving away to the urban periphery allowing housing to reinvent the vacated sites, thereby, transforming the precinct. Residential is pushing in rapidly as the MA motorway plus a public transport new Metro station makes this area very accessible and desirable. The AND site is fortunately located atop a high point that slopes down towards the water and the Sea of Marmara. Sitting astride this advantageous pinnacle, apartments on the upper levels will have sea views. Additionally, the site is surrounded by civic parkland that imparts a strong landscape context for the design.
