A renovation and extension to the rear of a modest sized ‘ex’ housing commission semi-detached clinker brick 1940’s house in Hampton, located on a generous allotment.

The owners required more space, updated amenities and desired a strong connection to the outside. The well travelled couple wanted a tranquil, calm and relaxing environment to call home.

THE KITE in Australia by Architecture Architecture

Tuesday, October 25th, 2016

Article source: Architecture Architecture

A stand of silver birches marks the place. Their trunks are white heat, tempered by pools of black. Everything here is light and shade. Taking cue from their slender friends, black downpipes score the white walls of the house, disappearing into the canopy above.

Approaching the threshold, the visitor is welcomed by pockets of shade nestled among protective brick walls. A large pivot window and a large pivot door throw themselves wide open, exposing the full throat of the house to the garden.

Milner Modern Residence in Vancouver, Canada by Comelite Architecture & Structure

Tuesday, October 25th, 2016

Article source: Comelite Architecture & Structure

In Canada, by grasping a modern home renovation, this is the new outcome of a usual quiet family house. With a garage ducked into the lowest ground; what stood before on its topper level, being seen at front sight was a one-floor building.

Now though after removing meters of soil that blocked our entrance design, the residence can make full use of their fresh inserted third floor by taking its new implemented stairs. There is a whole pitch wide enough to fit an open kitchen leading into the dining area as well as a living room next door. Just how the client has asked for and couldn’t believe how we managed it.

Cantilevered closets

The site is located on the soft ground near the lower basin of the big river. The client of this house decided to build one-storied house because the site area is wide enough, but it was necessary to reduce the foundation area because of the construction budget. So I arranged closets in the outer periphery, and attached them by the cantilevering structure.

Article source: Tidy Architects

This is a weekend house in Aculeo Lagoon, mandated by a young couple. The site is located on a hillside that contemplates the lagoon from afar.

The house, in consequence, acts as a landscape observation post and a faraway lookout through two unique picture windows that fork in different paths and heights, to capture two distinct views.

Article source: Tetsuya Mizukami Architects

This house is built for a married couple living with husband’s mother in Hokuriku region in Japan. The area is located in countryside surrounded by mountains and a lot of nature. Different strengths of wind is created by weather, and you can feel the wind moving across from the rice field expanding  southeast. On the other hand, the place is near by an intersection, and cars make noise of road traffic.

Therefore,  to combine these environment and make a comfortable living space, considering line of sight  from the road, noise, and draft was required for this design.

De Gouverneur in Rotterdam, The Netherlands by Architectuur MAKEN

Friday, October 21st, 2016

Article source: Architectuur MAKEN

Though Rotterdam – with its high-rise and modern developments – feels like a pretty dense city, there are still empty plots in the city center. These are the result of the ambitious post-war plans in between old houses. The gaps in between old and new are often left open, which are potential locations for small buildings. The local-government stimulates initiatives for such small scale projects. We started to bike around the city to find a plot in our favorite neighborhood and we took a close look to possible locations and the regulations that comply. About 2 years ago [sept 2014] we laid eyes on this very location, and we contacted the local-government with an email questioning: can we build here? Followed by a reply: Yes, please! The contractor started building in March 2016 and finished in July 2016.
