A-to-Z House in San Francisco, California by SAW // Spiegel Aihara Workshop

Tuesday, July 11th, 2017

Article source: v2com

The A-to-Z House by SAW // Spiegel Aihara Workshop wins a 2017 Architecture Award from the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIASF).

The A-to-Z House proposes an alternative to conventional approaches for expanding an outmoded San Francisco home. Perched on a hillside in Golden Gate Heights, a modest single story 1934 developer vernacular structure had limited space and failed to take advantage of expansive views of Sutro Tower, Golden Gate Park, Sausalito, and the Bay. But rather than replacing or merely attaching to the existing structure, the A-to-Z strategy seizes upon the existing forms – scaling, repeating, and manipulating found objects into a contextual collection of structures comprising a dynamic home immersed in its surroundings.

Casa Murray Music in Heredia, Costa Rica by Carazo Arquitectura

Sunday, July 9th, 2017

Article source: Carazo Arquitectura

To inhabit a house is to use each of its spaces, not only according to its specific purpose, that is to say, a kitchen will not be used only for cooking, a room will not only be for sleeping, a hallway will not be a linear path. Experiencing a home like Murray Music includes exploration, giving another meaning and other use to spaces that normally have specific functions.

Murray Music House is designed for a family of 5 inhabitants, mom, dad and three children, who constantly feedback the design process, being this key for the definition of each space and each corner of the house.

Berkshire Mountain House in Alfred, Massachusetts by Tsao & McKown Architects

Sunday, July 9th, 2017

Article source: Tsao & McKown Architects

Nestled into the tree line at the top of a gentle rise, the house folds and unfolds to take advantage of sweeping panoramic views, and wraps upon itself to form an intimate courtyard against the forest’s edge.

The building is conceived as movement through a Fibonacci spiral. The resulting plan allows a graceful progression through the rooms, spiraling up to the highest point, a cozy aerie. The architecture considers the qualities of the light and views throughout the day and seasons, and offers optimal arrangements for different experiences, from breakfast, to midday recreation, to star-gazing from bed.

Voice in Tochigi, Japan by studioLOOP

Friday, July 7th, 2017

Article source: studioLOOP

This is a project for husband, wife, and 2 children. Voice is a house located in Tochigi, Japan. The site is located on the north side of the subdivision site, and the east, west, and south side are surrounded by the neighbor’s house. We focused on reconsideration of openness and privacy, so first of all the floors of each floor were open windows on the south side. On the first floor, the inner veranda and the external deck were made continuous so that the line of sight faces the garden where the lawn spreads. The deep roof and sleeve walls protect wooden sash while blocking the strong sunlight of the summer and the gaze from the neighbor. On the second floor where the bedroom lined up, a wall was set up on the terrace to save the privacy from the outside, the east west and the upper part were opened, and the light was reflected on the white wall to secure the illuminance. Because the interior spaces are connected through openings and void, so spaces are filled with the voices of families.
