Mar Azul is a seaside resort on the coast of Buenos Aires, located 12 miles south of Villa Gesell, with an extensive beach of dunes and lush virgin pine trees forest. The owners, members of the studio and for years familiar with this location, chose precisely the splendid scenery of the forest to build a small summer house.
The site is the plane where our projects become architecture.
It is on this that we build and what we see are the apparent forms, those which appear above this plane.
In the Alcoutins House the real form is that which has as a support a plane which is 3.5 metres below ground level. It is like a lake, where the volumes float or rest on the base, where we see only the part that appears above the waterline.
The house is the result of dealing with three important variables: satisfying the functional needs of the family, adapting the design to a difficult sloping topography without resorting to complicate and expensive structures, and capturing the views towards a golf course despite the fact that the plot is not adjacent to it.
The house, 57 Tivoli Road, is situated on a corner block in the inner city Melbourne suburb of South Yarra.
Formally one of a series of attached row houses of disparate & eclectic housing styles, the exposed corner site meant a protective building was required for both visual and acoustic privacy, and the design seeks to create an enclosed shelter for the occupants, as well as forming an architectural bookend to the procession of houses which precede it.
A young couple approached our firm in late 2011 asking if we would help evaluate the feasibility of building their first home together on a rocky, heavily wooded East Tennessee site. The primary site constraints were clearly visible in the form of moss covered rock outcroppings scattered throughout the wooded hillside. Initial conceptual design efforts focused on options which limited the impact on the site while taking advantage of the unique opportunities presented by this rugged landscape. Early schemes were narrow and linear, weaving around the rock outcroppings and following the site’s contours in an effort to limit the elevation change from front to back.
The Sustainability Treehouse, an interactive interpretive and gathering facility in the forest, was conceived and created as a unique icon of outdoor adventure, environmental stewardship and high performance building design. It provides dynamic educational and gathering spaces for exploring and understanding the site and ecosystem at the levels of ground, tree canopy, and sky. It captures the wonder of childhood adventure and places environmental education at the forefront of meaningful and immersive outdoor experiences for thousands of annual visitors.
The home of the Charlotte Knights, the Knights Stadium will be a state-of-the-art Minor League Ballpark located in the heart of Charlotte, NC. With a seating capacity of 10,000 and a natural grass field, it will host not only baseball games, but other events such as concerts, festivals and community events.
The site is located in Sousas, one of four districts from the city of Campinas-Sao Paulo, a place that keeps very peculiar characteristics, with provincial air, protected from Campinas high degree of industrialization even though being situated only 10 km from the busy downtown.
The site is located in a beautiful, windy summerhouse village on the northern tip of Sjælland, Denmark. It is a summerhouse for a family of five, and a dog. The project is an assembly of five small buildings gathered around a wind shielded courtyard like a miniature village. The layout is well known in this area, often used for organizing traditional farm buildings. There is a kitchen building, parents building, children’s building, guest building and utility building.
