Holston River House by Sanders Pace Architecture

Thursday, April 24th, 2014

Article source: Sanders Pace Architecture

A young couple approached our firm in late 2011 asking if we would help evaluate the feasibility of building their first home together on a rocky, heavily wooded East Tennessee site. The primary site constraints were clearly visible in the form of moss covered rock outcroppings scattered throughout the wooded hillside. Initial conceptual design efforts focused on options which limited the impact on the site while taking advantage of the unique opportunities presented by this rugged landscape. Early schemes were narrow and linear, weaving around the rock outcroppings and following the site’s contours in an effort to limit the elevation change from front to back.

House in Mayuv in Kishiwada, Japan by Naoko Horibe

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

Article source: Naoko Horibe

The client requested a design that would melt into the surrounding paddy landscape as well as provide a safe, stable living environment for generations to come.

The architect responded with a plan that incorporates multiple courtyards, ensuring the privacy necessary for an open lifestyle even if homes are built on surrounding lots in the future. If two generations with different schedules eventually share the home, the courtyards will also provide a comfortable degree of distance between the living spaces occupied by various members of the household.

Holiday house in Nannup, Australia by iredale pedersen hook

Saturday, April 19th, 2014

Article source: iredale pedersen hook

The Nannup Holiday house forms part of a wandering path through the landscape from Perth to Nannup. This path dialogues with the landscape of intense forest, meandering river and rolling hills, each experience is carefully choreographed to enrich the occupancy of the house. A Jeykll and Hyde experience of the landscape is carefully controlled through oscillating vertical (forest) and horizontal (horizon) openings and the contrast of grounded and floating experiences. While the exterior dialogues with the numerous fallen trees, the interior is revealed through a sequence of ‘growth rings’ coded and extruded in relation to the building program.

CASA BE in Paredes, Portugal by Spaceworkers

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

Article source: Spaceworkers

The idea of a vernacular architecture (forgotten) and how it seeks to form a clear speech between the landscape and programmatic needs is something that we always admire.

A very successful example of this discourse, are the structures to support agriculture (normally function barns / granary), which in a more or less random would punctuate the countryside, as blocks of ephemeral appearance that levitated on the ground.

ANORO HOUSE in Sant Esteve de Palautordera by Anna & Eugeni Bach, arquitectes

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

Article source: Anna & Eugeni Bach, arquitectes

The project consists on the extension of an existing weekend house near the village of Sant Esteve de Palautordera, one hour north from Barcelona.

The existing house had been enlarged with small additions after its completion, but the new room program almost doubled the original surface of the house, and therefore, the new construction couldn´t be understood as one more new volume added to the original. The strategy, from the very beginning, was to treat the overall project as a “dancing couple”, where every part has its own role while dancing the same song.
