FLEUVE in Hamamatsu City, Japan by APOLLO Architects & Associates

Friday, January 24th, 2014

Article source: APOLLO Architects & Associates

The client, who is a hair stylist a salon owner, requested us to design a house with a hair salon. It is an exclusive and luxurious hair salon where the salon owner himself provides all services, and the number of clients is limited to only two at the same time. Our design strategy is to minimize the size of the salon, to create a compact and intimate space where the hair stylist gives utmost attention and professional service to the customer. On the contrary, we provide the maximum floor area of the house. The glass-clad salon has a stylish and sharp atmosphere, but the sharpness is softened by greenery in the front yard and low and deep eaves above it.

HOUSES SANTA ISABEL in Lisbon, Portugal by Ricardo Bak Gordon

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

Article source: Ricardo Bak Gordon

Perhaps what’s most important in this project is the desire to refer to the city that exists within the city – the places inside the city, whose matrix anchored in street, square and block it originated. There are many such places in Lisbon – more or less old, deeper or more open to the sky, but always very impenetrable.

The Pierre in San Juan Islands, Washington by Olson Kundig Architects

Tuesday, January 21st, 2014

Article source: Olson Kundig Architects

The owner’s affection for a stone outcropping on her property and the views from its peak inspired the design of this house. Conceived as a bunker nestled in the rock, the Pierre (French for stone) celebrates the materiality of the site. From certain angles, the house—with its rough materials, encompassing stone, green roof, and surrounding foliage—almost completely disappears into nature.

V’ House in Maastricht, Netherlands by Wiel Arets Architects

Saturday, January 18th, 2014

Article source: Wiel Arets Architects

V’ House was constructed for a couple that collects vintage cars, and is stitched within the medieval tapestry of Maastricht. The city dictates all new structures remain within the envelope of pre-existing buildings, and so a cut was created in the house’s front façade to generate a triangulated surface, which leads from one neighbor’s sloped roof to the opposite neighbor’s vertical bearing wall.
