House B in B – Larch Gold and Glacier White by Matti Schmalohr DI Architekt BDA DWB

Saturday, April 18th, 2015

Article source: Matti Schmalohr DI Architekt BDA DWB

This single storey longhouse in the park is a retirement home of a wine merchant and his wife, in close proximity to their children. Placed between two 60-year-old trees, the building is in close contact with the trees, includes the Siberian larch clad building the land from urban development. The larch façade and on the roof underscores the monolithic character of the archetypal house. The foundation of the south-facing wood construction forms the historical underground wine cellar, which is accessible from the outside. Sliding doors inside and outside connect with nature and allow the housing in an extending up to the front door, structured rocket ship. The sheltering Gable roof with its sky images always remains present.

“House in Valley Street” in Berkeley, California by Baran Studio Architecture

Thursday, April 16th, 2015

Article source: Baran Studio Architecture

This house is set on a traditional Berkeley street, and adjacent to a former rail line (traces of which are still visible from an aerial view.) The architecture borrows from the machine qualities of the railway to echo the former land use, and blends it with the character of the current residential neighborhood. Corrugated metal wraps down the roof and wall facing the former train line, while the front of the house expresses the pitch of the roof that ties it to more traditional house forms. The interior is an open expanse that also recalls a large, open station with a free plan and high vaulted ceilings.

DI HOUSE in Pula, Croatia by Ekokoncept d.o.o.

Wednesday, April 15th, 2015

Article source: Ekokoncept d.o.o.

This low-energy Mediterranean beauty is a family residence on the outskirts of Pula. The beautiful green surroundings and slightly elevated plot serve as a fantastic curtain for the modern cube the architect Tomaž Noč designed for the family. The plot was originally fenced with an old stone wall which was carefully disassembled in the beginning of the construction. The stones were then reassembled into a higher wall which serves as the backbone of the building, beginning at the pool area outside and then penetrating into the house acting as the support wall for the stairs in the living room.

Fitzroy Park House in London, England by Stanton Williams Architects

Saturday, April 11th, 2015

Article source: Stanton Williams Architects

Stanton Williams was commissioned by a prominent film director and an interior designer to create a new family home in the conservation area of High gate, north London, replacing a late 1950’s house.

The design strategy takes advantage of the sloping site by creating new additional spaces within the lower garden level, above which a series of interlocking sculptural forms emerge, evoking the spirit of a tree house.

House of Shifting Sands in Massachusetts by Ruhl Walker Architects

Saturday, April 11th, 2015

Article source: Ruhl Walker Architects

Sited gently on the lower slope of a dramatic sixty foot high coastal bank and surrounded by miles of undeveloped Cape Cod National Seashore beaches and scrub pines is a warm, modern beach house that is more than just a place to enjoy uninterrupted ocean views and sea breezes. Our clients dreamed of a house that would work equally well as both a year-round family “camp” and also as a “thinking retreat” for collaborating with their colleagues.

Mystic Lake House in Massachusetts by Ruhl Walker Architects

Saturday, April 11th, 2015

Article source: Ruhl Walker Architects

Our clients found the perfect location for their dream house on the shores of Mystic Lake, facing a heavily wooded park on the opposite shore and only a short drive from Cambridge and Boston. Alas, there was an existing house on the property, and the house was not actually for sale. However, the stars must have been aligned and their passion prevailed after it turned out that the current owner was actually contemplating a move to Washington, DC. With so few affordable undeveloped lots in suburban Boston, many of our clients are turning to “tear-down’s”, especially given that the more affordable houses are typically in such poor condition.
