House of pertijs in Breda, The Netherlands by Concrete Architectural Associates

Friday, September 13th, 2013

Article source: Concrete Architectural Associates

‘House of Pertijs’ has its roots in a traditional family-owned watch and jewellery store in the Dutch city of Breda, where clients were treated more like friends than customers. To create more customer flow, the owner of the store came up with a new vision: nowadays luxury is not merely about watches and jewellery, but also about lifestyle and its related high-end products. Why not combine these different product groups in one store? The idea of a watch and jewellery concept store was born.

The brief was to transform a typical pitched roofed bungalow house into a modern contemporary home. The configuration of the bedrooms upstairs were retained, extended only to make the rooms larger. The major redesign focused on the ground floor with the disassembling of walls into open plan spaces.

The plot of House L is sited in the wooded environs of Oosterhout.

The existing landscape, the orientation to the rural surroundings and the planning conditions were the deciding factors in the siting of the dwelling at the rear of the plot.

The ground floor was raised with respect to the current ground level, with large glass surfaces positioned to look out over the rural landscape and terraces running the length of the building with an unbroken roof surface on corbelling, all of which allow the outer space to be experienced to the full. At the same time, the large roof projections are designed to prevent too much light entering.

The Savyon residential area was built to guarantee a pleasant isolated life outside the city limits. It is a luxury “gated community” consisting of villas surrounded by parks and gardens and is no more than 18 minutes from Tel Aviv and the Ben Gurion airport. So, although appreciated for its natural surroundings, it has easy access to the country’s various infrastructures and road links.

The extension is an example of responsible rationalisation of a typical suburban house which offers a stimulating environment and demonstrates environmentally sustainable design.

The project is located on a 740m2 site in Kew. The existing house whilst generously sized lacked a clear thought-out plan. The land fell 5.5m over its length and further aided to dysfunctional arrangement of spaces. The brief required a rearrangement of spaces to better cater for the young family, relating each space to the outside world.

46 North Avenue in Leichhardt, Australia by Rolf Ockert Design

The site is located in a heritage conservation area that is fiercly protected by Leichhardt council. Being in one of the few streets in the Inner West Sydney that are still largely original in their streetscape, any alteration or addition was bound to be somewhere between controversial and impossible.

Being only about 100m2 in size, the existing free-standing house was far too small for its intended use as a home for a young family with children. The only way to accommodate the intended brief was to build a two storey addition, something that did not exist in the area.
