Wind Tower in UAE by Peter Stasek Architects

Friday, April 29th, 2016

Article source: Peter Stasek Architects

The global climate change leaves visible traces in the environment which sometimes emerge in the form of scars or devastation or simply represent the disappearance of something that has always been present. Humans struggle against this largely selfinflicted new world order and continuously try to slow this process down. The evershrinking glaciers in the high mountains are covered with awnings during summer and the regions which are endangered by sea flooding are equipped with new ramparts and sluices in order to protect the coast. Just as the tsunamis, the hurricanes transform the man-made environment in large stretches of land into a mishmash at one go, which makes it hard to guess what kind of function its components had to fulfill in the past. A new kind of aesthetics defined by chaos.

  • Research Abstract: How to create a building, which is shaped by tsunami and hurricane masses. A new kind of aesthetics generated by chaos.
  • Challenge: A new order generated from chaos. As a new challenge, one could try to develop new urban structures and architectural forms which are not in contrast to but in conformity with the forces of nature which are able to further develop their potential of strength as a result of the global climate change.

Niine 6a apartment building in Tallinn, Estonia by KUU architects

Tuesday, April 12th, 2016

Article source: KUU architects

The building is fitted into the urban tissue of a mostly residential historic area. The plot is big enough to leave a gap between the other buildings. With a 300 m2 footprint, the house is also a bit smaller than the adjacent buildings. This gave us the chance to preserve most of the trees and create a large back-yard with a playground, parking, and a communal terrace shared by the residents. In the front, the building creates a recess in the building line for the main entrance.  The first floor level is not much higher than the pavement, which provides a voyeuristic perspective into the apartments and, we believe, contributes to the street by fading the border between private and public space.

Loft renovation in Oslo, Norway by Austigard Arkitektur AS

Saturday, April 9th, 2016

Article source: Austigard Arkitektur AS

The architect was approached by the client with the request of converting the existing loft from uninsulated storage to living spaces. Due to the low ceiling height at about 2.1 at the maximum, the client suggested the roof be completely rebuilt in a position about one meter higher. This original plan would have doubled the building budget and most probably have been rejected by building authorities due to height restrictions. Instead the architect suggested keeping the roof in the same position, and instead work with the space so that it would be usable and feel spacious, even with the limited ceiling height.

House on a cliff in Oslo, Norway by Austigard Arkitektur AS

Friday, April 8th, 2016

Article source: Austigard Arkitektur AS

The client asked the architect for a one-room extension, which is what the zoning laws would permit. Since The house had only a small garden in front, facing morning sun, so the architect proposed to put the extension largely below ground, and allow for a big rooftop terrace facing evening sun and sunset. This would also allow for a more secluded location of the extended room, which was a wish by the client.

Article source: mamen domingo ¡! ernest ferré arquitectes

The exhibition tells the public the history of one hundred years of the School of Library Science in Catalonia since the founding moment with Prat de la Riba and the conception of Eugeni d’Ors, his defining moment in the Commonwealth of Catalonia, their stages of continuity in both military dictatorships, to its positioning in the educational landscape of democracy. Nonetheless, its main idea is to convey the ability to renew of this profession and therefore their educational environment within the context of the University of Barcelona, being today a dynamic and future focused profession, linked to the many changes that occur around books and records management.

Romsdal Folk Museum in Norway by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016

Article source: Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter

The Romsdal Folk Museum is an architectonic attraction and a treasured landmark that embodies the history and identity of the entire region. Our intention in this project was to let the structure signal its meaning and function through an architectural expression and the use of local materials. The scale of the building refers to the urbanity and morphology of the town. The overall layout of the museum grounds the connections to the town by linking different surrounding areas in an overall plan where all circulation is linked in a unified structure. The project conveys an open and progressive attitude that makes diverse utilization possible.

This project started with a mountain guide’s home. Because the house was originally self-built, it had a unique soul.

After a change in ownership, Solelyâ’s “vocation” also changed. Now using it as a second home, the new owners wanted more light, more spectacular views.

Thursday, February 18th, 2016

Article source: dmvA

Since more than 130 years, ‘Hooghuys’ is part of the the site Lorette Convent, composed of different wings surrounded by the Drabstraat, the Begijnenstraat and the Graspoort. The city block of Lorette Convent is characterised by two outer spaces, a triangular large courtyard and a more rectangular like smaller space.

Since 1989 the site was abandoned. A vacancy of more than 20 years turned the site and the Hooghuys into a ruin.
