House On The Costa Brava in Spain by Pepe Gascón

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017

Article source: Pepe Gascón

Some houses close in on themselves when connection with their surroundings is not desirable. However, others open up to their setting when it is clear that it endows them with qualities and provides their raison d’être and hence must become an intrinsic part of the project. This is the case of the Juncal y Rodney home since it is built on a plot of land located on the Begur massif (Girona) in one of the most sublime settings of the Costa Brava. The longitudinal volume of the north-south-facing building of two storeys – the upper one with three bedrooms and the lower one with the shared spaces – is thus open to the Mediterranean and the series of mountains and coves that are glimpsed on the horizon.

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017

Article source: C.F. Møller Architects

Villa Rypen is a single-storey detached house situated on the edge of a forest in Aarhus. Inspired by the unique site, the forest is invited in, and the house extends its terraces to reach out to the forest’s tall trees, and also to the garden. The different seasons of the year are apparent from the house’s living rooms, as well as from the exquisite wooden terraces.

Taylor Residence in Matthews, Carolina by situ studio

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017

Article source: situ studio

The house is on a flat site, well off the street, overlooking a woodland pond. The drive meanders through the trees and approaches from the northern forest side. The house screens any view of the pond. A tall entry and stair volume bisects the plan and is a lens to the pond upon entry. The entire ground level, which includes the master suite, opens north to the forest and south to the pond. Openings on the south wall are shaded by an overhang. A composition of surfaces and site walls define formal exterior spaces adjacent to the house.

We have realized the project of the small country house executed in style, not absolutely typical for us, in the house estate near Raubichi. The modular house which has 68 \”squares\” was successfully located in a picturesque corner of \”Uzgorye\” cooperative. The small SMUGA country house is already constructed and ready for living.

Phillip Island in Australia by Modscape

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017

Article source: Modscape

Set on a windswept hillside overlooking Bass Strait sits a modular home that allows the epic coastal location to be experienced in all its many states.

The project evolved from a pragmatic response to the challenges of occupying an exposed coastal site. Winds, often extreme, shaped the design with the house acting as a barrier and protecting the external courtyard tucked in behind.

House in Rua Faria Guimarães in Porto, Portugal by falaatelier

Sunday, August 20th, 2017

Article source: falaatelier

The old house was found in a sequence of equally discrete buildings from different periods of the 20th century. Built originally for a single family, and abandoned for decades, the brief proposed transforming the ruin into a housing unit with five apartments, responding to the accelerated gentrification process in the area.

House on the Island Murter in Croatia by Dva arhitekta

Sunday, August 20th, 2017

Article source: Dva arhitekta

The house is located in a typical Mediterranean-Dalmatian situation – on one side, a multi-storey house made for the market, on the other pseudotraditional luxury villa with pool. Long and narrow lot determines the shape of the home, and the client’s love for exotic plants offers an inspiration to solve the contact zones with neighbors and create a private world outlined by two frames. The upper loggia defines the living area with a kitchen and dining area overlooking the pool. The lower intimate space is oriented towards a longitudinal garden, a space of peace and privacy. Elementary form affirms the environment and transforms it into the extension of the home, drawing away from a non-inspiring environment outside the lot. Such an approach is also manifested in the choice of materials – the floors and walls are in similar textures so as to become a single whole.

Loft L in Paris, France by Jbmn Architectes

Sunday, August 20th, 2017

Article source: Jbmn Architectes

The renovation of this apartment seeks to exploit the high height available in this former artist studio located on the top floor of a Parisian building built at the beginning of the 20th century. Two mezzanines are arranged and face each other around a large central void. Stairs made of metal and solid wood, arranged symmetrically, give access to the rooms thus created. Large balustrades in fishing nets delimit the living area of the staircase. With the opening/closing of large internal shutters, the rooms can open on the central void or on the contrary isolate themselves, allowing a flexibility of uses.

House with a Tree in Basel, Switzerland by Sauter von Moos

Sunday, August 20th, 2017

Article source: Sauter von Moos

Maintaining the tenderness and charm of the existing house from the 1930’s, our intention was to

(1) gently renovate / restore the existing structure

(2) enlarge the building through a series of micro-scale additions that follow the logic of the existing spatial division into small rooms

(3) entangle the existing, the tree and the new in a joyful composition

(4) improve the house’s energy-balance by modernizing all technical installations using exclusively renewable energies

(5) carefully relate the house to its surroundings, both natural and urban.
