Havnehusene Housing in Copenhagen, Denmark by Sangberg

Thursday, January 23rd, 2020

Article source: Sangberg

Havnehusene (The Harbor Houses) is just one of many new building projects in Eastern Harbour in Aalborg paying homage to the area’s historical past.

When developing a historical neighborhood, you simultaneously need to acknowledge the past while you’re creating something new. So rather than embracing a tabula rasa strategy, the objective for the development of Easter Harbor has been to create a new sustainable district while maintaining a reference to the area’s history. Hence industrial history, high silo buildings and contact the water forms the basis for a reinterpretation and development of new urban qualities in the area.

Article source: Diego Wisnivesky ArcLab

Located in the countryside of Campinas, Brazil, the residence stands on the site as a glider that is just about to touchdown.

Surrounded by a preserved forest, the house is designed with steel structure to minimize construction impact on the environment.

The use of wide openings allows nature to enter, stretching the boundaries of the built space. Extended glass surface brings an extra dimension by reflecting the outside during the day and inside at night.

Article source: INOONI Jakub Zygmunt

The canoeing base in Augustów was established in 2019 as the implementation of the winning concept of the architectural competition settled in 2016. The competition task was to create a concept for a water sports center – a canoeist base – and the overall development of the neighboring recreational areas. The investment has been divided into several stages. The canoeing base is the first of them. Finally, the new development of Błonie on the Netta River is still to be built, including a multifunctional sports field, pumptrack, playground and places for citizens and tourists to get some rest.

McDonald Residence in New South Wales, Australia by Jayson Pate Design

Friday, November 29th, 2019

Article source: Jayson Pate Design

Inspired by MK27’s ‘Ipes House’, the design of the Macdonald House aims to adopt modern brutalist properties in a functional and simplistic manner. The design of the Macdonald House evolved in response to creating an open, light filled family home, while maintaining privacy on the exposed, corner site. The aim was to generate an organic and striking figure that utilises materials in their essence without manipulation. The character of the residence is generated by the inclusion of an off-form concrete body that dramatically cantilevers over the underlying living spaces. Concrete is utilised throughout the upper volume, creating the illusion of floating atop the delicate glass form below. Fixed timber-look aluminum batten screens create privacy and shield the four upper level bedrooms from the northern sunlight that fills the living spaces below. The thin battens simultaneously serve to soften the robust concrete texture and generate neat lines to extenuate the height of the structure. Feature stone blade walls enhance the privacy of the internal living space that seamlessly connect to the external alfresco. The light-filled living areas are accompanied by a linear pool that elongates the landscape. The landscaping was kept to an understated palette with small ground coverings, to then exaggerated by a mature dragon tree at the corner of the site.

Kawartha Lakes Cottage in Ontario, Canada by Altius Architecture

Thursday, October 31st, 2019

Article source: Altius Architecture

Situated on a heavily treed, west facing property on a beautiful Ontario lake, this year-round home replaced the family’s 1950’s cottage. Inspired by the idea of a simple sloping plane hovering over a large open living space that flows from inside to outside, the home was designed to connect with the surroundings and take advantage of the view to the lake and forest.

Originally conceived as two volumes connected by a breezeway, the home evolved into a two level home both to meet zoning requirements and energy efficiency goals. The home has radiant in-floor heating and a high performance building envelope to create a comfortable, energy efficient environment year round. Polished concrete floors provide both thermal mass and durability, while Douglas fir windows and ceilings create warmth, while walnut furniture and accents add interest to the spaces.
