House Folded in Osaka, Japan by Alphaville Architects

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

Article source: Alphaville Architects

This is a 100m2 residence for a couple and their cats located in Osaka, Japan. The typical method for designing a house would assign rectangular rooms with specific functions and lay out them. Such a design produces a series of rooms of similar size and causes monotonous spatial experiences. Our approach was to avoid the conventional design practice and to create a structurally rational but spatially heterogeneous house.

Arvindh and Priya’s house in Bangalore, India by Biome Environmental Solutions Pvt.Ltd.

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

Article source: Biome Environmental Solutions Pvt.Ltd.

The house sits in the context of a densely built residential area in North Bangalore. A substantial area of the plot along the road edge is occupied by the expansive canopy of a beautiful African Tulip.

The design takes the tree into consideration at every stage in an attempt to unite it with the built space, factoring in daylight and ventilation. The resulting home is marked by a sedate atmosphere, hints of the tree and the sky mingling with sober earth walls, which then contrast with oxide floors and painted steel windows.

Two Part Porch by KASE Sudio

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

Article source: KASE Sudio

Overlap combines the acts of dining and growing into the same layer. It enhances an important existing view by framing it with a radially arrayed trellis roof that intersects with a more solid roof for weather protection. The act of physical and visual overlap creates juxtaposition between individual elements (i.e. bench, screen, floor, ceiling) which highlights each element’s unique characteristics. The consistent material pallet unifies the porch as a whole, while providing it fresh identity from the original structure.

East Village Penthouse in New York by The Turett Collaborative

Sunday, August 14th, 2016

Article source: The Turett Collaborative

TCA has had a lot of experience connecting smaller apartments together into a seamless whole, but this adventurous client requested something we’d never seen before. In a newly constructed multi-residential development, in the East Village of NYC, TCA had the opportunity to meet a unique client’s desire to combine two penthouse condos… with a helical slide. In this transformation, two identical 1-bedroom units, one atop the other, were combined into a duplex 2-bedroom home with the option to descend in the usual way on a new Italian-made “Rintal” stair, or more speedily, in a seated position, careening through the new double-height atrium.

The project proposes an architecture that responds to the inherent qualities of the site, privileged views, and the larger context of the Sonoran Desert.  The language of the house draws upon these inherencies and allows for a greater understanding of the project’s circumstances.
