The project involves the restoration of a small apartment for tourist use in the historical centre of Mantova.
The apartment BROLETTOUNO belongs to a long design research path, which emerges in various interventions on built heritage.
Basically we try to keep together two worlds, the one of the old and the one of the new, in a balance able to guarantee the identity of both of them. Light and shadow are kept together in their ambiguity and plurality, without sacrificing the reasons of one at the expense of the other.

Appreciation
The workmen from the village wanted to tear down the black shed from 1934: draughty, weather-beaten and worm-eaten it was, they said. But we liked this black outbuilding of the mansard-roof house in the Vienna Woods that we had just renovated in a radical yet respectful manner.
»An old outbuilding became a writer’s workshop, a garden room for guests, and a children’s paradise«
The special appeal of this project lies in the appreciation shown for this old outbuilding in the shadows of the Vienna Woods villas. Back in the 1930s, few people could afford a basement, let alone a garage. And so they built their own sheds to store wood, raise rabbits or boil laundry in, which was then hung up to dry in the attic.

Atelier Barda has converted a building that once housed two apartments above a grocery store into a single-family home, “Résidence Villeneuve”. The façade consists of two wood-framed storefront windows on either side of a central door. The plot on which the building stands is located between a southwest-facing side yard (formerly used for unloading and storing merchandise) and a long garage with a shed above.

Built on the slope of Mount Shefford, the residence bridges an aerial view on one side and an ascending, rugged topography, populated by rocks and maples, on the other.
The initial idea for this project was to merge with the mountain, to nestle into the terrain until it becomes one with the residence. Entering the site from below, we see a black volume that seems to emerge from the slope and detach itself from the surrounding vegetation. Its dark truncated shape echoes the rocky projections that inhabit the site. The living areas, located upstairs, offer the occupant an intimate relationship to the site, a level access to a wild and untouched nature via a large terrace profiled to the topography. At the other extremity, the house rises above the void, allowing an atmospheric point of view towards the treetops.

The apartment occupies a top floor of a New York City, high-rise residential building located on the west side of Central Park, with beautiful views facing east over the park.
The idea for this project was born two or more decades ago when architect Yuuki Kitada visited the world’s highest waterfall, Angel Falls, in Canaima, Venezuela. It was an impressive experience that he wanted to express architecturally. Kitada repeated the drama of Angel Falls in the construction and materials in this New York apartment.

The residence sits in an urban fabric where the immediate context is a busy street and a lack of foliage for the house to respond to. The house is designed on a plot measuring 45’x90’, located in a typical Indian neighbourhood flanking the busy street. The dense residential fabric of the neighbourhood, proximity of the neighbours and the busy street in front prompted the conception of an introverted building. Diagrammatically, the program of the house is laid out in the form an ‘H-shaped plan’ that wraps around a courtyard such that each arm of the ‘H’ flanks the courtyard. The open to sky courtyard, a highly sustainable element, not only becomes the point of interest and activity within the house, but also represents the ‘outside’ within the introverted house. The pergolas help shade the double height space and cut the glare, while the green wall helps in reducing the heat. The court is an oasis not just for light but for fresh air as well, where hot air escapes and fresh air comes through. Acting as a light well, the court enables the user to have a macro oasis within the house. The interiority of the house is designed to revolve around the experience of the garden, similar to that of a conventional courtyard/thotti house.
