Beachyhead in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa by SAOTA

Friday, July 29th, 2016

Article source: SAOTA

“The clients approached SAOTA to design a family holiday home that responded to the site, especially the views. They wanted a relaxing, yet elegant home that would be comfortable when entertaining many guests whilst also feeling intimate and cosy when it’s only one or two of them in the house,” said director and project leader Phillippe Fouché.  Other factors that drove the conceptual organisation of the building were the views, sunlight, prevailing wind direction and the zoning parameters.

La casa della zia in Bergamo, Italy by dep studio

Friday, July 29th, 2016

Article source: dep studio

The project concerns the restructuring of three independent units positioned in the historic center of Sarnico joined by a common architectural approach: the stone walls were recovered by freeing them from the plaster layer that covered and new architectural elements are perfectly identifiable with respect to pre-existing but with them they relate without conflict.

Foundry Mews in London, England by Project Orange

Friday, July 29th, 2016

Article source: Project Orange

Introduction

Foundry Mews is a surreptitious new-build, mixed-used development on a backland site in Barnes, West London. Tucked away behind a traditional range of shop buildings fronting Barnes High Street, the site was a long abandoned dilapidated MOT and car body repair workshop.  The brief for this sensitive site was to create studios and housing. We chose to take the model of the artisan mews where studios and living space share an intimate courtyard setting. The linked gabled buildings use vernacular forms reminiscent of small-scale workshops. The scheme comprises six duplex dwellings above a plinth of studio workspaces with two additional units and an apartment in the gabled northern block. While the brick gables and slate roofs merge into the surrounding street-scape, contemporary screens formed within the brickwork gables shield terraces of the apartments. This unassuming addition to the neighbourhood is an essay in placemaking and offers a thoughtfully re-worked typology for so called ‘difficult’ sites.

CMYK House in Moers, Germany by MCKNHM Architects BDA

Friday, July 29th, 2016

Article source: MCKNHM Architects BDA

“Our concept was aiming towards the impossible: To add something new that will change the whole perception and experience of the site but to blend in at the same time.”

History: When the father of the client bought the plot of land besides an open gravel pit south of Moers, Germany in the late fifties, it was still unclear if the mine would be converted into a landfill of garbage or a lake. Luckily, the family ended up with a villa at an idyllic lake that is surrounded by a forest. Because of the possible landfill at the time of construction, the layout of the house was orientated away from this now beautiful nature reserve: The extensive paved driveway was situated between the house and the fantastic nature setting and an existing garage was spatially blocking the connection towards the lake. Inside the house only a view spaces provided a view of the lake.

House with a doma Salon in Ehime, Japan by Takashi Okuno Architectural design office

Friday, July 29th, 2016

Article source: Takashi Okuno Architectural design office

The house is located in the suburbs of Matsuyama, a northwestern city of Shikoku, a region famous for ohenro, or the Shikoku pilgrimage. The structure is very long and narrow, extending north to south.

It is the home of a gregarious and energetic elderly mother and her daughter who values the practice of cooking meals slowly and intentionally, along with two cautious cats.

Blake Street Residence in Victoria, Australia by B.E Architecture

Wednesday, July 27th, 2016

Article source: B.E Architecture

The Blake Street Residence was intended to investigate a typology of coastal architecture which responded primarily to the ruggedness of its Australian landscape setting.

This dictated elevating the house above the ground plane through the construction of a massive stone podium. The choice of Maffra stone and its rudimentary construction relates to similar stonework seen in many of the historic buildings in the surrounding area.
