Wednesday, July 20th, 2016

Article source: SAOTA

Situated on a cliffside overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Cliff House in Dakar, Senegal was completed in 2011, with SAOTA, the Architects and ARRCC doing the Interior Decor. The house was designed for a Senegalese businessman and his family.

Built on the site of an old World War Two bunker and on the edge of a cliff, Cliff House maximises its commanding position to create a house that is not only dramatic but with the incorporation of historical elements quite magical and mysterious.

The Drift House in Northern Canada by The Open Workshop

Tuesday, July 19th, 2016

Article source: THE OPEN WORKSHOP

With insufficient core populations to support public structures, the typology of dwelling has attained the highest level of refinement within the Arctic’s unique climate. Pre-WWII indigenous Inuit Housing Types had embedded connections to the local landscape, its orientation, materials and fabrication, while embracing the nomadic Inuit lifestyle. With zero ecological footprint, these temporal dwellings employed opportunities from the landscape and atmosphere to form a complex shelter that negotiated thermal performance, local materials, soft construction techniques, program and cultural values.

LAHO House in Hofit, Israel by Brahma-Architects

Tuesday, July 19th, 2016

Article source: Brahma-Architects

At the onset of this project, when we asked the clients what type of house they were interested in, they replied “a simple house, like a lifeguard tower”.

We designed a one story house spread across a corner lot. Two layers of exposed concrete comprise floor and ceiling with white stucco walls enveloping the house. Sliding the upper plane forward allowed for light penetration at the core of the house as well as air circulation. Between the two layers lies a rectangular tube, separating while connecting inside form out. This unique space houses an entry corridor and art studio.

Morrison House in Sydney, Australia by Chris Elliott Architects

Saturday, July 16th, 2016

Article source: Chris Elliott Architects

The concept for this house renovation is simple -‐ a protected and private timber box sits on top of a glass box that dissolves the boundary between house and garden.

The rear of house was a collection of long, narrow, dismal, poky, dark rooms with no view or connection to the garden. There was one small spot of sun – on the back step.

Kaleidoscope in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam by CongSinh Architects

Thursday, July 14th, 2016

Article source: CongSinh Architects

The rapid urbanization in several Asian cities has dramatically reduced the living area per person. Especially in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, most people, sometimes extended families, spend their lives in narrow and long tube houses where they live apart from nature and in dark and unventilated spaces.

Long tube houses for extended families have always been a complicated question for generations of Vietnamese architects.
