Renovation and extension of a 30’s row house in Utrecht, The Netherlands by Lab-S

Saturday, April 16th, 2016

Article source: Lab-S

Dutch design studio Lab-S has renovated a 30’s row house in the city of Utrecht (the Netherlands) and added a contemporary two story extension in harmony with the old house. The house has been made suitable for a young family with three kids as each floor has been given a new layout. Also, the old extension at the back of the house has been replaced by a new one of the same size. The design of this new façade is inspired by the old rear façade, with its large amount of window frames. Lab-S chose to keep the steel structure of the new extension in sight and add new steel window frames in the same colour. The result is a robust and at the same time slender looking extension that lets natural light enter deep into the old building.

Sloan Berkes House in Naramata, British Columbia by Allen+Maurer Architects Ltd.

Friday, April 15th, 2016

Article source: Allen+Maurer Architects Ltd.

Pebbles lives among the pebbles, as underground garage tunnelled into the steep hillside from the access street at the north-east. It was too steep to build a road to the top of the ridge from where one looks up and down and across the Okanagan Valley and -Lake, so this was the only option. Pebbles is also home to a wine room, kept at the temperature of the earth surrounding it, a foyer, and the geothermal heat pump.

House with ZERO stairs in Wroclaw, Poland by STOPROCENT Architekci

Friday, April 15th, 2016

Article source: STOPROCENT Architekci

The clients, a middle-aged couple, approached us with one definite request – they wanted to build a house with no stairs, a house that would be equally practical and enjoyable when they get old. The site offered no obvious clues – a flat piece of land in a second line of buildings, in a suburban part of the city of Wrocław, among disappearing traces of a rural past, surrounded by a chaotic mix of houses of all styles, materials and conditions.

W HOUSE in Pak Chong, Thailand by IDIN ARCHITECTS CO.,LTD.

Friday, April 15th, 2016

Article source: IDIN ARCHITECTS CO.,LTD.

The design concept of W-House is derived from the requirement that the owner would like the house that expresses his character in terms of space and form. Therefore, the design subject was how to interpret the owner’s lifestyle and passion into architecture. The idea initiated by the owner’s favorite activity of traveling and kayaking. There was one picture of a boat sailing on the river that has inspired the designer. The river acts as a supporter for the boat. As a house, the function areas of living room, dining room, and service are supporters for the private areas of bedrooms. The bedrooms are like the boat which the river is supporting underneath for sailing. The idea was developed into the building orientation by maintaining the basic elements but completely reveal the story, functions and context.
